Improve Your Home in Three Easy Steps
Whether you want to add value to your home before putting it on the market or simply want to live in a nicer house, making a few simple changes can enhance the look of the home and make it stand out in the neighborhood.
1) Enhance the Curb Appeal
The view of your home from the street can say a lot about you. Taking pride in your home by sprucing up the exterior of the house can make the home stand out and give a great first impression.
- Something as simple as power washing the exterior of the home can get rid of years of dirt and make architectural features stand out. It can also help to rid the house of mold and mildew buildup.
- Decluttering the yard, trimming unruly shrubs and trees and regularly weeding and cutting the lawn can do wonders to the look of the home without doing anything at all to the structure itself.
- If a completely redoing the exterior of the home is out of the question, a coat of paint can do wonders to the look of a home. Adding accents such as shutters, updated entry lighting and attractive house numbers can give an updated feel.
- A cracked, stained driveway can be an eyesore. Depending on the damage, simple repairs may be sufficient to improve the look. Repair cracked and crumbling areas and remove weeds sprouting from the cracks. Unsightly oil leaks or other stains may be hidden by using concrete paint or stain.
2) Install an Alarm System
Adding a security system to your home can increase value while lowering insurance premiums. Many alarm systems offer combined intruder, fire and carbon monoxide alarms. You are not only protecting your home and valuables, you are also protecting you and your family.
Alarm systems not only alert the homeowner and security company to an intruder, they also act as a deterrent to crime. A criminal looking to break into a home doesn?t want trouble. They want to be in and out without being noticed at all. A home secured with an alarm system is not an easy target and will most likely be overlooked.
3) Kitchen and Bath Remodels
The kitchen and bathrooms are the most important rooms when determining value of a home. Unfortunately, they are also the most expensive rooms to remodel. Updating light and plumbing fixtures, new paint and re-facing cabinetry can also give these rooms a fresh new look with minimal cost.
Those working within a bigger budget may wish to update the kitchen appliances and add counter space and storage. Turning a small cramped kitchen into a functional family hub can add a lot of value to the home for potential buyers. If adding additional bathrooms is prohibitively costly, maximizing the space and functionality of the current baths can be done by adding a large soaking tub and multiple sinks.
