What's Next? Better Engagement and a Marketplace Without ...

Image2012 has seen social media continue to gather pace, with even more social channels hitting the market. Even with all this buzz, there is still a level of scepticism and uncertainty amoung businesses who still fail to understand the power and the enormous opportunities that social media presents. This situation is somewhat similar to the late 1990s when a large number of businesses believed they didn?t need a webpage, which resulted in many missed opportunities.

Within this world of change in how we communicate, connect, and engage what does 2013 have in store for us? There are a number of technology driven shifts underway, and these will continue to have a major impact on how we work and how we engage using social media. Here are some of the trends that will impact us in 2013.

ENGAGE ME

A lot of businesses have a presence on social media, but very few have taken this opportunity seriously. There are even a greater number of businesses that still see Social Media as a fad, or are unable to grasp the opportunity due to either a lack of understanding or fear about someone posting a complaint on their social channel site.

2013 will be a defining year as we see the social channels continue to grow and evolve. For businesses, governments, charities and educators, 2013 is the year of engagement. The consumer is now front and centre and controls what information he/she wants to receive from their brand communities. They are the ones that give you and your brand permission to interact with them. It?s no longer a one way street in terms of communication, where traditional marketing has been used over the years. 2013 is the year of engagement; it?s the time for brands to interact with their community / tribe members, understand more about your brand from them and get them talking about your brand. The organisations that get this will see their brands outpace their competitors, especially the ones that still don?t see social media as a channel to participate in.

A MARKETPLACE WITH NO BOUNDARIES?????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????

2013 will see companies beginning to realise that they are no longer servicing a local community, or geographic location. With the internet, mobile phones and social media, business is now truly global and can service anyone that they engage with via social media.

Smart Brands will begin to realise that they need to rethink their strategy, realign their marketing mix and product offerings to effectively compete in a global marketplace.

With this shift in thinking comes an understanding that social media is an important part of your marketing mix. If you have a product to sell or a service to market, social media can play a major part in getting your brand global. Today you don?t need to rely on an ?intermediary ?such as distributors, licensors or ?retailers. You can get online set up a presence on social channels and sell your product or service 24/7.

POWER TO THE PEOPLE

Social media has given every person a voice. For the first time ever the power is now rests in the hands of the individual. ?2013 will see this power shift, continue to grow and influence every aspect of society.

The consumer now holds the power, they now decide which brands they want to interact with and receive information from.

This shift will continue to reverberate across society as brands, companies, associations, and governments come to terms with this shift in power.

As we have seen recently, social media controls the noise, spreads the word, allows individuals to gather together and become one voice. People now congregate both on and offline to support a cause or injustice.

In 2013 social media will continue to drive the news, views and opinions of the individual which in turn aggregates to the masses.? ?Power to the people? can now bring down Governments. It can now impact elections, damage or destroy brands, change legislation, and create change itself; it provides the silent majority with a voice. ?

Governments, Businesses and Brands as well as social media providers now have to come to terms with how they operate, ?market, communicate and engage in this new economy. As we have recently seen with Instagram (who wanted to change their terms of operation to give them the right to use other peoples images for advertising purposes) people will spread the message and people will disengage in protest.

BATTLE OF THE NET TITANS

In 2013 we will see the battle of the ?net titans?. These are the major players on the internet, once dominated by computer hardware companies, the new age titans are the likes of Google, Amazon, Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, and Apple.

These companies dominate a marketplace like no other before them, and they hold the biggest asset of all, information; on what we like dislike, think and do.

We will see these big companies butting heads with each other as they try to grab an advantage and more power.? Some may decide to stop allowing their information being shared via search engines, others may stop third party providers of services, (such as the plethora of? twitter third party services providers from being able to access the twitter streams) in an attempt to control the information and data they are gathering.

Will this battle create separate webs with their own search engines where you never need to leave the social channels you engage in?? This will certainly start to play out over the coming years and dramatically change the nature of? the internet and destroy the original philosophy of the internet, which was open shared content.

COMPANY SOCIAL MEDIA

2013 will be defined as the year that social media started to be? ?integrated? into business. This trend will be all about businesses using social media channels as a vehicle to communicate and collaborate and engage with other employees online through social media channels.

We have seen education facilities start to integrate social media into their operations, and we will start to see savvy smart businesses and governments do the same. Using social media as vehicles to communicate internal announcements, to create collaborative cross functional working groups, to seek out new employees or internal job opportunities.... social media for business will provide endless opportunities and will hopefully put an end to those dreaded emails that have become the biggest time consuming and some may say most unproductive activity in business today.

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) ? A well-to-do real estate broker at a high-end Manhattan firm has pleaded not guilty to a rape charge brought from a young woman he met on the Internet.

As WCBS 880?s Irene Cornell reported, Lakhinder Vohra, 47, met the woman through a Web site called SeekingArrangement.com. The woman claimed Vohra attacked her on her first visit to his Wall Street apartment.

  • WCBS 880's Irene Cornell Reports

The Web site caters to men like Vohra, who works for the firm Nest Seekers described as ?sugar daddies with lots of cash.? Vohra used the handle ?Daddylovesarmcandy? on the Web site and claimed to be worth as much as $10 million, according to a New York Post report.

The 26-year-old victim claimed that he threw her face down on the bed, placed his hand on her back, and raped her, the newspaper reported.

Vohra?s attorney compared the situation to that of Dominique Strauss-Kahn, the disgraced French politician and former head of the International Monetary Fund who was accused of rape by his maid in 2011. The criminal case against Strauss-Kahn was dismissed, and he has since filed a lawsuit against his accuser, Nafissatou Diallo.

In Vohra?s case, attorney Mike Saint-Pre told the court: ?What we have here is a case of extortion. Even as the woman was leaving the apartment, she was attempting to extort money from Vohra.?

Vohra was ordered held on $10,000 bail on Friday, the newspaper reported.

(AP) ? Victoria Azarenka had the bulk of the crowd against her. The fireworks were fizzling out, and when she looked over the net she saw Li Na crashing to the court and almost knocking herself out.

Considering the cascading criticism she'd encountered after her previous win, Azarenka didn't need the focus of the Australian Open final to be on another medical timeout.

So after defending her title with a 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 victory over the sixth-seeded Li in one of the most unusual finals ever at Melbourne Park, Azarenka understandably dropped her racket and cried tears of relief late Saturday night.

She heaved as she sobbed into a towel beside the court, before regaining her composure to collect the trophy.

"It isn't easy, that's for sure, but I knew what I had to do," the 23-year-old Belarusian said. "I had to stay calm. I had to stay positive. I just had to deal with the things that came onto me."

There were a lot of those things squeezed into the 2-hour, 40-minute match. Li, who was playing her second Australian Open final in three years, twisted her ankle and tumbled to the court in the second and third sets.

The second time was on the point immediately after a 10-minute delay for the Australia Day fireworks ? a familiar fixture in downtown Melbourne on Jan. 26, but not usually coinciding with a final.

Li had been sitting in her chair during the break, while Azarenka jogged and swung her racket around before leaving the court to rub some liniment into her legs to keep warm.

The 30-year-old Chinese player had tumbled to the court after twisting her left ankle and had it taped after falling in the fifth game of the second set. Immediately after the fireworks ceased, and with smoke still in the air, she twisted the ankle again, fell and hit the back of her head on the hard court.

The 2011 French Open champion was treated immediately by a tournament doctor and assessed for a concussion in another medical timeout before resuming the match.

"I think I was a little bit worried when I was falling," Li said, in her humorous, self-deprecating fashion. "Because two seconds I couldn't really see anything. It was totally black.

"So when the physio come, she was like, 'Focus on my finger.' I was laughing. I was thinking, 'This is tennis court, not like hospital.'"

Li's injury was obvious and attracted even more support for her from the 15,000-strong crowd.

Azarenka had generated some bad PR by taking a medical timeout after wasting five match points on her own serve in her semifinal win over American teenager Sloane Stephens on Thursday. She came back after the break and finished off Stephens in the next game, later telling an on-court interviewer that she "almost did the choke of the year."

She was accused of gamesmanship and manipulating the rules to get time to regain her composure against Stephens, but defended herself by saying she actually was having difficulty breathing because of a rib injury that needed to be fixed.

That explanation didn't convince everybody. So when she walked onto Rod Laver Arena on Saturday, there were some people who booed, and others who heckled her or mimicked the distinctive hooting sound she makes when she hits the ball.

"Unfortunately, you have to go through some rough patches to achieve great things," she said. "That's what makes it so special for me. I went through that, and I'm still able to kiss that beautiful trophy."

She didn't hold a grudge.

"I was expecting way worse, to be honest. What can you do? You just have to go out there and try to play tennis in the end of the day," she said. "It's a tennis match, tennis battle, final of the Australian Open. I was there to play that.

"The things what happened in the past, I did the best thing I could to explain, and it was left behind me already."

The match contained plenty of nervy moments and tension, and 16 service breaks ? nine for Li. But it also produced plenty of winners and bravery on big points.

Azarenka will retain the No. 1 ranking she's mostly held since her first Grand Slam win in Melbourne last year.

Li moved into the top five and is heartened by a recent trend of Australian runner-ups winning the French Open. She accomplished that in 2011, as did Ana Ivanovic (2008) and Maria Sharapova (2012).

"I wish I can do the same this year, as well," Li said.

Later Saturday, Bob and Mike Bryan won their record 13th Grand Slam men's doubles title, defeating the Dutch team of Robin Haase and Igor Sijsling 6-3, 6-4.

Sunday's men's final features two-time defending champion Novak Djokovic and U.S. Open winner Andy Murray. Djokovic is seeking to become the first man in the Open era to win three titles in a row in Australia.

Azarenka was planning a night of partying to celebrate her second major title, with her friend Redfoo and the Party Rock crew, and was hopeful of scoring some tickets to the men's final.

She said she needed to let her hair down after a draining two weeks and hoped that by being more open and frank in recent times she was clearing up any misconceptions the public had of her.

"When I came first on the tour I kind of was lost a little bit," he said. "I didn't know how to open up my personality. It's very difficult when you're alone. I was independent since I was, you know, 10 years old. It was a little bit scary and I wouldn't show my personality.

"So the (last) couple of years I learned how to open up to people and to share the moments. I wasn't really good before. I hope I got better. It's your judgment."

26/444 Healing from Infidelity: Play and the Message of the Affair

Chili hasn't been with us for a couple years now but I still love this pic. Chili

Most relationships begin with a lot of play. Couples truly enjoy one another in an atmosphere of fun. Ann and I had lost that. In trying to be a good Christian man I decided that our spare time would be family time. This sounded good to me. The decision left a deep part of my wife neglected. We didn't have fun time together alone.

Our relationship had become dull. We were busy doing lots of good, kind meaningful activities. We had fun with others and fun with our kids. Together we paid bills, taught Sunday school, fed the dog, watched TV etc. Part of Ann's affair and most affairs is recapturing fun, a sense of life, even if it is outside what one knows to be true and right. The intoxication of feeling alive again overshadows all else. Ann desired for that feeling of life again in our marriage.

Her desire was good. The direction she chose to pursue it wasn't. ?

Before we figured out how to bring that back into our relationship, or maybe even know that we needed to, another man showed up with time to give and enjoyed fun times with Ann. Making it through an affair involves understanding the message it was sending about the marriage. I resisted wanting to use 'the messages of the affair' for a while. I had a choice of whether to learn from the most painful experience of my life or to stay resentful.

It wasn't a linear process but eventually I chose to learn. Ann and I recaptured a sense of play in the midst of doing all the day to day of life. We like to be goofy together. We tickle. We joke. We laugh at ourselves. We flirt. I like flirting with her. And we like to be silly with our dog Chili by putting brightly colored ribbons on his head.

Depression-era drainage ditches emerge as sleeping threat to Cape Cod salt marshes

Jan. 24, 2013 ? Cape Cod, Massachusetts has a problem. The iconic salt marshes of the famous summer retreat are melting away at the edges, dying back from the most popular recreational areas. The erosion is a consequence of an unexpected synergy between recreational over-fishing and Great Depression-era ditches constructed by Works Progress Administration (WPA) in an effort to control mosquitoes.

The cascade of ecological cause and effect is described by Tyler Coverdale and colleagues at Brown University in a paper published online this month in ESA's journal Frontiers in Ecology and the Environment.

"People who live near the marshes complain about the die-off because it's not nice to look at," said Coverdale. "Without cordgrass protection you also get really significant erosion, retreating at sometimes over a meter a year." The die-back is ugly, but it is also a substantial loss of a valuable ecological resource.

When fishermen hook too many predatory fishes out of the marsh's ecosystem, the fishes' prey go on fruitfully multiplying, unchecked. The reverberations down the food chain can result in uncomfortable environmental changes for human residents. The problem for Cape Cod is the native purple marsh crab (Sesarma reticulatum), which burrows in the mud along the inner shorelines of the marshes, and dines almost exclusively on the tall and fast-growing low marsh cordgrass (Spartina alterniflora) that lines the marsh edges.

The tall and sturdy cordgrass is an essential buffer against the friction of tides and storms. Without it, soft banks erode out from under the other plants and the water line retreats farther and farther back into the marsh. The unchecked multitudes of purple marsh crabs have taken a visible toll on the developed areas of the Cape. By 2008, 50 percent of the creek banks in the marsh had worn back. Old drainage ditches have expanded from nearly invisible threads to open channels -- some nearly 30-40 meters wide -- with muddy, exposed edges.

The purple marsh crabs need tidal creek edge habitat to thrive, and do not venture into the inner heart of the marsh, where a shorter cordgrass species (the closely related, but squattier Spartina patens) and other high marsh plants dominate. The old WPA mosquito ditches also fulfill the crabs' habitat requirements. Once benign, the ditches nucleated dramatic reconstruction of the landscape with the loss of blue crab, striped bass, and smooth dogfish, and the subsequent boom of purple marsh crabs.

One of the remarkable features of the cordgrass die-off is its tight locality. Some areas of undeveloped marsh as close as a kilometer to the denuded banks around private residences and public docks appear healthy and unaffected. Mosquito ditches that can only be reached by a hard slog through undeveloped marshland do not display the striking die-off and bank erosion. The pattern cued the researchers to the possibility that recreational fishing was the trigger, Coverdale says. Few people wade into the swamp to fish.

Marshes are excellent model systems for observing the intersection of human impacts that can trigger environmental degradation, the authors say, because they have been exploited by humans for centuries, if not thousands of years, and are easily studied from aerial and satellite images.

"Marshes are one of the most heavily utilized resources worldwide," said Coverdale. "They are easily accessible, and provide shellfish, fuel, baitfish and opportunities for recreational anglers. A lot of those harvests are probably sustainable."But he is interested in the tipping points at which use of the marsh becomes unsustainable. The revelation of the slumbering menace of the mosquito ditches raises the prospect of other submerged impacts that may surface under the influence of new, contemporary pressures.

In the early twentieth century, Cape Cod was a very different place from the summer vacation destination it is today. As land use shifted from agriculture toward tourism, the local chamber of commerce funded an effort to draw off standing water through drainage ditches to suppress the mosquito population. The program was probably not very effective at controlling mosquito-borne disease, Coverdale says, but it did put a lot of people to work, and they were industrious. Over 2400 kilometers of old ditches stripe the marshes of the long, low-lying peninsula. The Cape Cod Mosquito Control Project continues ditch-dredging under the Barnstable County Department of Health and the Environment.

The ditching program had a relatively minor impact on the marshes compared to other forms of development, however. Following the Second World War, Cape Cod developed rapidly, nearly tripling in permanent human population between 1940 and 1976, when a new awareness of the ecological and economic benefits of the marsh brought strict limitations on further development. Ditches claimed only 2 percent of the marsh, compared with the 70 percent affected by roads, houses, restaurants, marinas, and other hallmarks of a modern coastal community. Alone, the ditches did not fundamentally alter the marsh ecosystem. The species that colonized the ditches were already present in the marsh; the WPA's remodeling project just moved them around. The additional pressure of recreational fishing changed that equilibrium.

How do Cape Cod residents and local fishing enthusiasts feel about this news? Coverdale says the area has a strong conservation ethic. People remember what the Cape looked like when their parents lived there, and are unhappy with the changes. As a fishing enthusiast himself, Coverdale does not see ecologists and fishermen as opposing forces.

"People enjoy catching fish today, but they come back year after year. They want to see the fish there tomorrow," Coverdale said. He has faith that the tendency of residents and long-time visitors to take the long view will make a solution possible. A system of catch and release could make fishing the Cape sustainable and allow the local community to retain its fishing heritage.

Storm clouds are filled with bacteria

The storm clouds in Earth's atmosphere are filled with microbial life, according to a new study.

The research, published Jan. 23 in the journal PLoS One, revealed that hailstones drawn from storm clouds harbor several species of bacteria that tend to reside on plants, as well as thousands of organic compounds normally found in soil. Some of the bacterial species can seed the tiny ice crystals that lead to rain, suggesting they play a role in causing rain.

"Those storm clouds are quite violent phenomena," said study co-author Tina Santl Temkiv, an environmental chemist at Aarhus University in Denmark. "They are sucking huge amounts of air from under the clouds, and that's how the bacteria probably got into the cloud."

Living on a cloud
In the past, researchers have found bacterial life in clouds that drift over mountaintops. Bacteria have been found as far up as 24.8 miles and may even survive as spores into space, Temkiv said. [ Holey Clouds: Gallery of Formations Cut By Airplanes ]

Temkiv and her colleagues wanted to see if bacteria lived in the violent storm clouds that hover above the Earth's surface. To find out, they studied 42 hailstones that had formed in a thunderstorm over Ljubljana, Slovenia, in May 2009.

After carefully removing the outer layer and sterilizing the hailstone, they analyzed its chemical composition.

The team found thousands of organic, or carbon-containing, compounds ? nearly as many as found in a typical river, Temkiv said. In addition, they found several species of bacteria that normally live on plants. Some of the bacteria make a pinkish pigment that allows them to withstand the punishing ultraviolet rays in the atmosphere.

Some of bacteria found are ice-nucleators, meaning they can act as seeds for ice crystals to attach to in the clouds above Earth. When these same ice crystals get large enough, they fall as rain or snow, depending on the air temperature.

The findings suggest that bacteria could influence weather patterns, possibly making rain, Temkiv said.

"They may be growing in clouds, increasing in number and then modifying the chemistry in the cloud but also in the atmosphere indirectly," she told LiveScience.

The researchers think the bacteria come from the air hovering just above Earth that gets swept into the storm clouds through updrafts. That would suggest the atmosphere is a thread that can connect distant ecosystems, and that certain bacteria may be better at colonizing faraway environments, Pierre Amato, a researcher at France's Blaise Pascal University who was not involved in the study, wrote in an email.

"Clouds can be thought of as transient ecosystems selecting for certain [types of bacteria] that are better fitted than others, and that can thus quickly disperse over the globe," Amato said. "Understanding how microbes disperse is relevant, of course, for epidemiology, and also for microbial ecology."

Ex-teacher accused of sexually assaulting 20 kids

By Olsen Ebright and Rosa Ordaz, NBCLosAngeles.com

LOS ANGELES -- A former elementary school teacher was arrested Wednesday in a school sexual abuse case allegedly involving at least 20 children and one adult, according to police.

Robert Pimental, 57,?was arrested Wednesday and is being held on $12 million bail.

The Newport Beach, Calif., man faces eight counts of continuous sexual abuse and seven counts of lewd acts upon a child, according to a statement from the Los Angeles Police Department.

"The investigation began when several girls told their parents that they had been inappropriately touched by a fourth-grade teacher during school at George De La Torre Jr. Elementary," the statement read.

Pimental left his position with the school during the investigation, which began?March 15, 2012.

"When the District first learned of the allegations, the teacher was immediately removed from?campus ... Dismissal proceedings were initiated," LAUSD?spokesman Daryl Strickland said in a statement. "Before the Board of Education could act on dismissal, he chose to retire."

Students' parents were told about the allegations last March within 72 hours of Pimental's removal from campus, in accordance with LAUSD?policy, Strickland said.

United Teachers?Los Angeles, a union that represents LA?educators, said in a statment that it is "not familiar"?with the allegations against Pimental, adding that after his resignation, Pimental is no longer a member of the union.

More news from NBCLosAngeles.com

"The allegations described are horrific," the statement read. "As teachers we have a duty to uphold the trust our students and their parents place in us."

Pimental?had worked for the Los Angeles Unified School District since 1974.

George De La Torre Jr. Elementary is located in Wilmington,?a largely Latino Los Angeles Harbor Area neighborhood?with about 50,000 residents. The school, opened to fanfare in 2006, has about 800 students.

Anyone with information about the case was asked to contact police at 213-486-0570.

Nintendo Wii U Virtual Console, Performance Improvements Coming ...

Today, Nintendo President Satoru Iwata announced a slew of upcoming enhancements and new game titles for its Wii U gaming console.

Responding to consumer requests, Nintendo will provide two significant system updates that will help speed up the time it takes to launch software and return to the Wii U menu. The updates will be delivered in two stages: One in spring, and the next in summer.

nintendo

Shortly after the spring update, Nintendo will launch a Virtual Console for the Wii U that will allow users to play classic Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) and Super NES games.

Only a select number of NES and Super NES games will be available at first. Iwata said the games are being rewritten for the Wii U system, so it?s not possible to offer the entire collection at launch. Eventually, the game selection will include Game Boy Advance titles, and users will be able to save game progress and play right on the Wii U GamePad.

NES games will cost between $4.99 and $5.99, while Super NES games will fall in the $7.99 to $8.99 range. Discounted rates ($1 for NES titles and $1.50 for Super NES games) will be available for those who already purchased the Wii versions of the Virtual Console games.

Nintendo will also offer one game for 30 cents each month through July to celebrate the launch the Virtual Console for Wii U and the 30th anniversary of Nintendo?s Family Computer. Games include Balloon Fight, Kirby?s Adventure, Super Metroid and Donkey Kong.

As for new games for the Wii U, Iwata revealed that an HD remake of The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker is scheduled for this fall, along with a new Zelda game. A 3-D Mario and a Mario Kart racing game are also on tap, with more details coming at the E3 trade show in June. Other games on the schedule include one centering on the Yoshi character, Wii Party and a role-playing game from Monolith Soft.

In his presentation, Iwata apologized for the absence of any new Wii U titles for the months of January and February, but said that offering high-quality games was more important.

yoshi

?Nintendo takes seriously its responsibility to offer a steady stream of new titles in the very early days of a new platform to establish a good lineup of software,? Iwata said. ?On the other hand, we also firmly believe we have to offer quality experiences when we release new titles. Based on our software development schedules at the end of last year, we concluded we should spend a little more time to satisfy to our Nintendo standard of quality.?

The Nintendo Wii U launched in November, and the company has sold more than 890,000 units, according to NPD. Despite this, older competing consoles like Microsoft?s Xbox and Sony?s PlayStation are still doing well, so game selection will be key for Nintendo.

China HSBC flash PMI hits two-year high in January

BEIJING (Reuters) - Growth in China's giant factory sector accelerated to a two-year high in January, a preliminary private survey showed, as manufacturers received more local and foreign orders in an encouraging sign for the country's economic rebound.

The HSBC flash purchasing managers' index (PMI) rose to 51.9 in January, the highest since January 2011 and above the 50-point level that shows accelerating growth in the sector from the previous month.

The PMI, the earliest preview of China's economic health in 2013, is the latest indication that the world's second-largest economy is steadily recovering from a near two-year cool-down.

"Despite the still tepid external demand, the domestic-driven restocking process is likely to add steam to China's ongoing recovery in the coming months," Qu Hongbin, chief China economist at HSBC, said on Thursday.

Asian investors welcomed the data.

The MSCI's broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan defied nervousness over Apple Inc's disappointing earnings to edge up 0.1 percent, while the Australian dollar steadied from an earlier slip.

HSBC said the sub-indices for output, new orders and employment that account for three quarters of the flash PMI all improved in January to hover above 50.

The output index climbed to 22-month highs while the employment sub-index was at its highest since May 2011.

Demand for Chinese exports also improved slightly this month, the flash index showed, but it shed little light on whether the pick-up would last.

China's exports had a surprisingly strong spurt in December, contributing to the country's emergence from a protracted cool-down, though analysts worry the rebound would be short-lived on soft U.S. and European demand.

On the other hand, analysts said the gentle up-swing in domestic activity appears to be sustainable and should drive China's economic recovery.

"The consumer is coming back," said Tim Condon, an ING economist in Singapore.

Chinese shoppers have spent more in recent months after the country's successful leadership change last year and a stabilizing euro zone raised confidence, he said.

"Manufacturers are seeing the pick-up in spending growth as a reason to expand production," Condon said.

General Motors Co said last week it will add 400 dealers in China this year as it looks to keep growing faster than China's overall automotive industry which is expected to expand by 8 percent this year.

EXPORT ORDERS RECOVER

The new export orders sub-index rose to 50.1 in January, up from December's 49.2 that pointed to waning demand.

The sub-index was persistently weak in the past year, rising above the 50-point threshold for only three months in 2012 and at times contradicting China's official trade data.

HSBC's final PMI had showed China's new export orders cooling in December, at odds with government data that said exports zoomed to seven-month highs that month.

The jump in exports, alongside generous government investment in infrastructure, helped to pull China's economy out of its worst downturn in three years between October and December to grow 7.9 percent from a year earlier.

But the late spike in activity was not enough to prevent China from sinking into its slowest annual pace of economic expansion in 13 years in 2012, growing 7.8 percent.

Many analysts are cautiously optimistic about China's economic prospects this year and are betting on steady state investment to stabilize growth. Exports, however, are expected to remain a drag.

A Reuters poll this week showed analysts predict China's annual economic growth would rebound a shade to 8.1 percent this year.

But faster growth is also expected to fuel inflation.

While a majority of the 24 analysts polled by Reuters believed China would not change its monetary policy this year, a third of them thought the central bank could raise interest rates in the second half of 2013.

Thursday's flash PMI showed price pressures may be building. The input price sub-index was at its highest since September 2011, while the output price sub-index pulled back slightly.

HSBC said its PMI survey is based on a poll of purchasing executives from over 420 manufacturing firms, and that the flash PMI is compiled from responses from 85 percent to 90 percent of that pool.

But in a sign that China's recovery could be uneven, German engineering conglomerate Siemens AG warned on Wednesday that demand from China was likely to remain weak for the coming months after it saw global orders for industrial automation and drive technology slide in its first quarter.

"The United States and Germany developed well, but China's demand as an industrial country will pick up again in the second half of the year at the earliest," Siemens' finance chief Joe Kaeser told journalists.

Can a Web Site Get Visitors to 'Feel' - You're the Boss Blog - The ...

My company, Abe?s Market, is an online marketplace for natural and organic goods that connects Americans who want to live a more healthful lifestyle with passionate business owners they may not otherwise find. We get hundreds of thousands of visitors every month, and our monthly sales growth has been in double digits. Based in part on that experience, the editors of You?re the Boss have asked me to be the host of regular conversations on the blog about what works and what doesn?t when selling online. We?re looking for small businesses that would like to have their sites evaluated by the blog?s readers. (If you are interested in volunteering your site, please see below.)

This first post is about American Giant, a start-up clothing manufacturer that makes all of its clothing in America and sells online only. The company was founded by Bayard Winthrop, who has a rich understanding of how clothing is made and sold. He believes the current clothing supply chain is broken, and he thinks his opportunity lies in bypassing retailers and distributors to sell directly to consumers through the Web. He introduced American Giant last February, and he considers the company an ode to the glory days of American-made, high-quality cotton clothing.

That sounds nice, of course, but here is the obstacle: Can Mr. Winthrop persuade people to buy sweatshirts they cannot touch or try on? Will people buy based on images and word of mouth alone?

American Giant is a new brand with none of the market recognition enjoyed by companies like Lands? End, Polo or Gap. Mr. Winthrop, who aims to take on those billion-dollar clothing brands, thinks American Giant, which is based in San Francisco and manufactures all of its products in the United States, can not only survive but conquer. But clearly the Web site ? especially its photography ? will be very important to that effort.

When the site was introduced in February, it featured the photos below. While the photos were professional, the team at American Giant, which has raised $2 million in start-up financing from Donald Kendall, a former chairman of PepsiCo, had doubts about their impact. Some feared that the photos felt flat, were contrived and provided little sense of the brand?s story.

The Web team also questioned the decision to cut off the model?s head instead of showing his face and making a personal connection. This led to an interesting dynamic. Early on, the site?s conversion rate ? the percentage of visitors who actually make a purchase ? was lower than projected. But the company was extremely successful with its social media and word-of-mouth marketing. This led to increased traffic, to styles? selling out much faster than expected and to better than anticipated revenue (in fact, the clothing is selling so well ? thanks in part to some very positive reviews ? that the company cannot fulfill orders before March). But American Giant recognized that it was missing an opportunity to convert a larger percentage of its visitors from browsers to buyers.

I am a big fan of management that is critical of its own decisions and willing to revisit them quickly. Even though American Giant had already spent considerable amounts of money on its photography, it decided to invest a significant sum, $35,000, to redo the shots.

Right and below are some shots it recently unveiled on the site. The new theme focuses on real world heroes, showing the American Giant line in action on everyday people. Mr. Winthrop explained that the new tagline ? ?Don?t Get Comfortable? ? is intended to create ?an intimate and provocative look at what hard work and dedication is: a pillar of the American Giant brand.?

The crucial choice was not to use professional models. Instead, the company tapped local people, including a pastry chef, a creative agency strategist, a sports bar owner, an amateur boxer and a music producer, in an attempt to make the campaign more realistic and attainable. The team feels that the background and texture add visual interest, the lighting is more natural and the close-up shots of the sweatshirts demonstrate the fit.

To help display the new photography, the American Giant Web team added a home page carousel and three capsule features below it. Take a look at the photos below and at the redesigned site and tell us what you think.

As you look at the site, here are some questions to consider:

  • Do you think the photography and the stories behind it make a difference?
  • Was the money spent on new photography worth the investment?
  • Should the company have focused more attention on, say, social media marketing?
  • What would the site have to do to convince you that its products really are superior?
  • Do the photos convey the company?s story in a compelling way that makes you want to buy the clothes?

Please share your comments below. In a follow-up column next week, we will tell you how American Giant has been doing since the redesign and what Mr. Winthrop thinks of your suggestions.

Would you like to have your business?s Web site or mobile app reviewed? This is an opportunity for companies looking for an honest (and free) appraisal of their online presence and marketing efforts.

To be considered, tell us about your experiences ? why you started your site, what works, what doesn?t and why you would like to have the site reviewed ? in an e-mail to youretheboss@abesmarket.com.

Richard Demb is co-founder of Abe?s Market, an online marketplace for natural products that is based in Chicago.

Apple pulls 500px photo app over nudity concerns

8 hrs.

Apple has pulled two popular photography apps from the iOS app store, reportedly because the company found it too easy to find nude images ? though, notably, not pornographic ones. 500px, whose apps were removed, is resubmitting them with adjustments, but Apple is already being criticized for this seemingly arbitrary policy.

The apps were taken down Tuesday morning, following discussions between 500px and Apple relating to a new version of the app. With nearly a million downloads at the time of the takedown, 500px's main app was a popular way to share photos online ? and not not a new one, either. The version Apple removed was functionally much the same as the one approved back?in October of 2011.

500px cofounder Evgeny Tchebotarev told TechCrunch that an Apple reviewer rejected their proposed update on the grounds that it let users search for nude photos. In fact, the app defaults to a safe search mode that can only be disabled via the main website.

Furthermore, the nude photos that one might search for are of the art variety, not porn. "We don?t allow pornographic images. If something is purely pornographic, it?s against our terms and it?s deleted," Tchebotarev?said.

On Twitter and at various blogs and news websites, Apple came under fire almost immediately. Among others, the company's?own Safari Web browser app can be used to find explicit images extremely easily.

It's not the first time Apple has been attacked for what people view as its Puritanical restrictions on apps. Web browsers in the app store are age-restricted because they could be used to find adult material, and the company has also removed what it feels are adult titles from its bookstore, prompting widespread criticism.

Tchebotarev took to Twitter to say that his company is hoping to get its?iOS app back online soon, presumably after some Apple-suggested adjustments have been made.

UPDATE 5:21PM: An Apple representative tells GigaOM that there were complaints of child pornography, although the CEO denies this was mentioned to them:

"The app was removed from the App Store for featuring pornographic images and material, a clear violation of our guidelines. We also received customer complaints about possible child pornography."

Haitian amputee makes comeback on dance floor

PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti (AP) ? Georges Exantus thought he'd never dance again. He was lucky just to be alive.

The earthquake three years ago in Haiti's capital flattened the apartment where he was living and he spent three days trapped under jagged rubble. After friends dug him out, doctors amputated his right leg just below the knee.

Israeli doctors and physical therapists who came to Haiti after the quake sent him to Israel for surgery and rehabilitation.

Three years later, the 31-year-old professional dancer is back on the floor, spinning away as he does the salsa, cha-cha and samba. A prosthetic leg doesn't hold him back.

Exantus says he's the same person he was before the Jan. 12, 2010, earthquake struck southern Haiti.

But it's clear the life of the young man nicknamed "The Gladiator" has been changed by the disaster that killed tens of thousands of people and forced an estimated 4,000 to 6,000 survivors to undergo amputations because of gangrene-related infections.

Exantus walks with a slight limp. He can't dance as fast as he used to or balance as well or do some of his old moves, such as flipping his partner over his shoulder.

Exantus has also learned to ignore the long stares and quiet whispers, products of a longstanding stigma in Haiti for people with disabilities. Before the quake, few resources existed to accommodate Haiti's disabled, and many regard people with disabilities as misfits.

"I'm not focused on what people say about me or how society sees me," says Exantus, who married his girlfriend in July on a dance floor.

If some see him as something of an outcast, his friends find inspiration: He's not one for self-pity; he was determined to dance again, and did. He's part of a Latin dance company and gives classes.

"Some victims of Jan. 12 stay in the same place and they can't do anything," says dance partner and friend Modeline Gene Arhan, 26. "Georges has a goal. He's always thinking of where he's going."

He's already made one dream come true.

"As long as I'm living," Exantus says, "I'm going to dance."

Mother Paradox: Reminder.

I went to a baby shower yesterday. ?That is not a favorite activity of mine. ?I don't think I need to write a post about why baby showers suck. ?I could, believe me, but I think you all know already. ?And if I wrote about baby shower suckage, I wouldn't be able to write something that is more important and that I want to record here on my blog. ?This blog has faltered at times, but it is a place where my life is recorded. ?It's for me, and hopefully, for my kids one day. ?I don't want to forget how that baby shower made me feel.

The mom-to-be (MTB, henceforth) is a sweetheart and so is her husband. ?The shower was held at their home which is a sweet little cape with small rooms and beautiful walls full of color. ?It is cozy. ?I drove over two hours to get there. ?I almost never leave my boys on my weekends off from work. ?NEVER. ?Two weekends a month we are all together and mostly we stay at home in our house. ?And I gave MTB's new baby a gift that I made, a hand-painted crib, bedclothes, and a doll. ?While I had been dreading the long drive and being away from my family, my darker feelings began to lighten as I spent time in their home. ?MTB had a scare a couple of months ago. ?Her cervix started to shorten and she nearly went on complete bed rest. ?The idea of bed rest is bad enough, but the idea of a very premature baby is frightening beyond measure. ?MTB became tearful a number of times throughout the party, thanking everyone for coming and for supporting her through her worried time. ?You could see, though, that her worry is not over. ?She trembled a little as she cried. ?And I knew just how she felt.

I was moved. ?To tears in the car on the way home. ?I remembered how my own pregnancy had been so difficult to achieve, that their was a loss of a twin early on, that I had a huge cyst on my ovary, that at the end my amniotic fluid was getting lower and lower. ?I remember becoming a mother during my pregnancy, how much I worried and thought about my baby. ?I remember that I went to see my doctor at the very end and that Pete stood next to me as I laid on the exam table. ?I remember that I began to sob before she even entered the room. ?Pete thought something had happened, that I was in pain, and I was so choked by tears that I couldn't tell him that I just couldn't take another moment of worry. ?I remember that night in the hospital, I had to go to the bathroom and the nurse held my arm and guided my IV pole and that I fell and she caught me and I thought to myself, my god, she is so strong. ?I remember the last push when my son came forward and I do not remember the pain because I do believe the mind doesn't want you to bring that shit up. ?I remember the nurse sprawled on the floor where I had knocked her with the force of my leg's push as I strained. ?I remember my son was born then.

And I remember how much I wanted another child. ?How much it took to get to my second son. ?I remember every necessary document, background check, fingerprinting, scrutinization. ?I remember the 28 months of being on a list and seeing the finish line creep away farther all the time. ?I remember preparing for a girl and, instead, having a boy. ?I remember my secret relished joy that it was a boy and not a girl. ?I remember his sweet face in the referral photo. ?I remember again the worry cranking up about how he was being cared for. ?I remember the first time I saw him in Ethiopia. ?I remember his drooly peachiness. ?I remember leaving him. ?I remember that as the nine weeks passed until we got to see him again that I might have gone right off the cliff insane because that is wholly unnatural. ?I remember the embassy giving us the go ahead to come get our son. ?I remember sobbing with relief. ?I remember bringing him home and all the nights I have slept next to him since. ?I remember his soft grasp of my fingers at night.

And I remembered my husband. ?I remembered the day we met, the day I moved in with him, the day he proposed, the day we married, the day we moved into our house, the day our dog died, the days our cats died, the day his grandmother died, when his dad had cancer, when we went through infertility treatment, when we suffered losses, when we triumphed, when we went to Ethiopia as a family and watched that family grow. ?I remembered hikes and dinners and driving places with him. ?I remembered how he makes me laugh. ?I do think he thinks he is here to entertain me. ?And he does. ?I remembered how steadfast he is, how loyal.

I kept driving. ?And the sunset coming down the mountain into New York was outstanding, as this is what January is meant for around here. ?The sky was alit with pink and purple and baby blue and soft white. Just like a baby shower. ?And I counted all my blessings and I drove home to my little house and I looked at my boys and I kissed them and sniffed them and touched them and I was happy to be reminded of every little thing about each one of them.

The Truth About Sexless Relationships | SheNOW

When passionate turns into platonic?.

By: Jenn Clark

We?ve all heard the jokes, stories, and complaints from long-term couples who no longer have sex.? In fact, it?s become somewhat expected that once your relationship moves from ?new? to ?long-term,? the sex will drastically diminish ? if not die out completely.? According to recent estimates, over 20 million American couples are thought to be in sexless marriages (sex less than ten times per year).? However, these platonic unions don?t simply occur between middle-aged spouses.? More and more young people are involved in romantic relationships that look more like roommates than lovers. ?

So what gives?? Why the sexual famine?? And, if you?re starving more than feasting when it comes to your sex life, what can be done to correct it? ? ?

Although there?s little disagreement that the occurrence of sexless relationships is at an all-time high, there is no single explanation for why they occur.? Trauma from past sexual abuse, erectile dysfunction, and anxiety and depression disorders are some of the more extreme causes of a lack of interest in sex.? However, day-to-day factors in both life and in the relationship all contribute to a severe decrease in its frequency.?

Here are some of the most common reasons why couples stop having sex.

Fatigue and busyness.

?Most people feel as though they are working harder than ever and for less financial reward than in previous generations.? Stress at work, money troubles, and overextended schedules aren?t exactly turn-ons.? Many couples struggle to find the time to simply relax and enjoy each other?s company, let alone have a steamy night together.? When we allow the hectic pace of life ? and the anxiety it can cause ? to overtake us, we find our libidos slowing down. ? ? ?

Unmet expectations, disappointments, and resentments between partners.?

As relationships break down, the sex always suffers.? Let?s face it, it?s pretty hard to be physically attracted to someone when you?re continually warring with them. Instead of working on communication and conflict resolution skills, couples often let the hostilities and dissatisfactions fester.? They build walls and become more and more isolated from each other.? Not exactly a formula for passion, right??

Bedroom boredom.

?If you?ve been together for a while, it?s easy to get into a sexual rut.? You do this, he does that.? He touches you here, you touch him there.? Fifteen minutes and it?s over.? Not very hot?? And rather than working on keeping things spicy, apathy sets in.? You think, ?I guess we should have sex, but I?d really like to watch ?The Daily Show? instead.?? As ?The Daily Show? wins more and more, the sexual part of your relationship begins to fade away.? ? ? ?

Can a sexless relationship survive?

Maybe.? While some couples grow content in the sexless nature of their union, most do not.? One or both partners typically feels rejected, scorned, and unloved ? which further contributes to the destruction of the relationship.? Many begin to feel restless and start to fantasize about looking outside of the relationship to have their physical and emotional needs met.? A lack of passion is not only a significant cause of infidelity, but of break-ups and divorces, as well. ?

If the platonic nature of your relationship is due to deep-seeded issues such as sexual trauma, a lot of work needs to be done to overcome it and couples therapy is a must.? This is also true if the lack of sex results from an extended period of poor communication and the buildup of resentments.? As with anything in a relationship, however, if both partners actively work to resolve their problems, nothing is insurmountable. ?

So if you feel the passion in your relationship fizzling rather than sizzling, what can be done to get the fires roaring again?? The great news is your sex life doesn?t have to disappear ? or even diminish ? over time.? Yes, you can have great sex no matter your age or how long you and your partner have been together.? And the sooner you address the problem, the greater your chances of solving it.

Work on the oral.

?No, I?m not referring to that kind of oral.? I?m talking about verbally communicating with your partner.? It might be difficult to discuss sex, but if you?re mature enough to do it, you?re mature enough to talk about it.? Explain ? in a non-threatening, non-judgmental way ? that you want to bring the passion back into your relationship and have a discussion.? In fact, the better your communication and conflict resolution skills are ? with respect to every aspect of your relationship ? the better your sex life will become. ?

Create times for intimacy.

?Having priorities is a good thing and making your sex life an important component is essential.? For some couples, a romantic weekend away or regularly scheduled date nights are enough to get them back on track.? Others need adjustments such as turning off the television earlier or being okay with going to bed later.? Whatever the tweaks you personally need to make, always think back to the beginning when sex was more spontaneous and fun.? Try to recreate those feelings now.

Be open to experimentation.

?Once you are able to discuss sex more freely, it becomes much easier to talk about your fantasies and desires.? Not only is it okay to try new things, you absolutely should!? Amazing sex in a long-term, committed partnership requires being open and taking some risks.? Let?s face it:? The hotter you make sex, the more you?ll want to do it.

Keeping sex alive isn?t something that happens on its own.? It requires both partners to work at it and make it a priority ? just as you have to do with the relationship itself.? So if your passion is on the verge of being extinguished, now is the time to relight it.? There are great rewards in having a satisfying and complete love life. ?

Smoke-free law linked to large fall in child asthma hospital admissions

Jan. 21, 2013 ? The introduction of smoke-free legislation in England was immediately followed by a fall in the number of children admitted to hospital with asthma symptoms, a new study has found.

NHS statistics analysed by researchers at Imperial College London show a 12.3 per cent fall in admissions for childhood asthma in the first year after the law on smoking in enclosed public places and workplaces came into effect in July 2007. The researchers found that asthma admissions continued to fall in subsequent years, suggesting that the benefits of the legislation were sustained over time.

The effect was equivalent to 6,802 fewer hospital admissions in the first three years of the legislation, according to the analysis published January 21 in the journal Pediatrics.

Asthma affects one in every 11 children in the UK. Before the law was implemented, hospital admissions for children suffering a severe asthma attack were increasing by 2.2 per cent per year, peaking at 26,969 admissions in 2006/2007. The trend reversed immediately after the law came into effect, with lower admission rates among boys and girls of all ages. There were similar reductions among children in wealthy and poor neighbourhoods, both in cities and in rural areas.

Previous studies have shown that hospital admissions for childhood asthma fell after smoke-free legislation was introduced in Scotland and North America. The law in England was also found to have reduced the rate of heart attacks.

Dr Christopher Millett, from the School of Public Health at Imperial College London, who led the study, said: "There is already evidence that eliminating smoking from public places has resulted in substantial population health benefits in England, and this study shows that those benefits extend to reducing hospital admissions for childhood asthma.

"Previous studies have also suggested that the smoke-free law changed people's attitudes about exposing others to second-hand smoke and led more people to abstain from smoking voluntarily at home and in cars. We think that exposing children to less second-hand smoke in these settings probably played in important role in reducing asthma attacks.

"The findings are good news for England, and they should encourage countries where public smoking is permitted to consider introducing similar legislation."

SOFIA, Bulgaria (AP) ? Bulgarian police detained a man after he pointed a gas pistol at an ethnic Turkish party leader as he was delivering a speech at a party caucus in the capital Saturday. No shots were fired.

The video from the Saturday event in Sofia shows the man climbing the podium where Ahmed Dogan, the leader of the Movement for Rights and Freedoms, was speaking, and pointing the gun to his face.

Dogan struck the man before he could pull the trigger, while other delegates wrestled the assailant to the ground. TV footage showed several people punching, kicking and stomping on the man when he was on the ground.

Police arrested him and took him to a hospital. It wasn't immediately clear if he sustained serious injuries, or how he got past security to enter the hall with nearly 3,000 people attending.

Eventually, the attacker was identified by police as 25-year-old Oktai Enimehmedov, a Bulgarian national and ethnic Turk, from the coastal city of Burgas. He was carrying the gas pistol and two knives. A gas pistol is a non-lethal weapon used for self-defense, but experts say when fired from close range it can cause life-threatening injuries.

Interior Minister Tsvevtan Tsvetanov told journalists that the assailant had a criminal record for drugs possession, robberies and hooliganism.

The liberal MRF party mainly represents ethnic Turks and other Muslims in Bulgaria, who make up 12 percent of its 7.3-million population.

The conference had to elect a new leader to succeed Dogan, who is one of the Balkan country's most influential political figures. The 58-year-old has been at the helm of the party since founding it in 1990.

Lyutvi Mestan, who was expected to become the new party leader, said "the true reason for the assault was the language of hatred and confrontation."

Saturday's assault was the gravest attack on a politician in post-communist Bulgaria after the 1996 killing of ex-prime Minister Andrei Lukanov.
