Dear Prudence,
My brother, who is in his late 40s, was recently arrested and charged with sexual abuse of a child when she was 9 years old. This girl is now16 years old and says she didn?t remember the abuse until recently. This charge came after she and my brother?s daughter, who were friends, had a huge fight and severed their relationship. In addition, my brother had something to do with the accuser?s brother getting into legal trouble. My brother has denied the charge and passed a lie-detector test. My brother, who is one year younger than I am, has asked me to speak to his lawyer and be a character reference for him. Here?s the problem: When we were growing up, my brother used to sneak into my room at night to touch me, and this is what he is accused of doing to this girl. It seems like a bit of a stretch to think this is a coincidence, but he has passed a lie-detector test. I don't know if something that happened more than 30 years ago is relevant. Our parents were abusive and distant, and I felt that he did what he did, and I didn't do enough to stop him, because we were so starved for love and attention. This situation has brought up a lot of old feelings, guilt, confusion, etc. I don't know if I should be honest with his lawyer. It is also complicated by the fact that child protective services have taken his children out of the house, and the court case will affect whether he is allowed to have contact with them. It would destroy any relationship with my brother and probably with my entire family if I said anything about our childhoods. What should I do?

Dear Ripped,
As I started reading your letter, I was thinking that this sounds like a case of someone being falsely accused of sexual abuse. These instances are rare, but they do happen, even though what?s more typical is that abuse goes unreported. Then came your revelation, and it turns out you were one of those abused children who never told anyone. You recognize you cannot be a character witness for your brother or at least not one his lawyer would want. So as you point out, your dilemma is whether to simply decline to speak or tell your story. I spoke to Lisa Lerman, a professor at Catholic University?s Columbus School of Law, and she said if you were to tell your brother?s attorney what happened to you, that lawyer would not be obligated to disclose this to the prosecution. However, the information could affect the defense because the lawyer would likely then be constrained from asserting there have never been any other such accusations against your brother. That seems like a worthwhile limitation to put on the defense.

The bigger question is whether you tell the prosecution. While coincidences do happen, I agree with you that it stretches credulity to think that this girl is manufacturing a story that just happens to describe your own experience. As for the circumstances of her accusation, it?s not unusual for young people who were abused and kept quiet to blurt out their story while under emotional duress. If you accept the girl?s account, then that means your brother molested his own child?s playmate. That would make me worry about the safety of his children and any others who have been unsupervised in his home. The fact that he turned to you as a character witness makes his passing of a lie-detector test (which are notoriously unreliable) look at lot less exculpatory. Your brother needs a mental health evaluation; perhaps he dissociates himself from his own actions. I think you should consider having a consult with a lawyer of your own to discuss all your legal options, including what would happen if you spoke to the prosecution. It may be that becoming a witness against your brother is just too wrenching, but at least you will have considered it. Then please get some psychological counseling. I?m concerned that you?re still blaming yourself for what happened to you as a girl (?I didn?t do enough to stop him?). You had an awful childhood, which this situation has brought back to the surface. You deserve to have a caring person help you deal with all this pain.

Dear Prudence: The Happy Hooker

Dear Prudence,
My boyfriend and I have been a couple for a year, and we recently moved in together. He is a very intelligent, mature, caring, and funny man, and I feel our relationship has a great chance at "going the distance." Since we began cohabitating I found out he has a strange habit: He keeps a remnant of his baby blanket inside his pillow case and, after he thinks I am asleep, he pulls it out and sucks on it. I discovered this while changing the sheets one morning and noticed a wet spot on his pillowcase. I tried to talk about this with him, but he became embarrassed and refuses any attempt to discuss it. The habit itself is not a deal-breaker. What is a deal-breaker is the wet blanket, which has a smell. I want to hand wash it, but I don't want to do this without his permission. I understand the blanket might help him relieve some anxiety; it's the hygiene issue that bothers me. I can't wrap my head around kissing him in the morning knowing that he's been sucking on the blanket at night. How do I raise the issue of washing the blanket? And is this a "normal" thing, or does it suggest deeper issues?

Dear Wet,
Without blankey your boyfriend might be sucking down a bunch of pharmaceuticals to get him through the night. But if more people had a piece of blankey to chew on, they might need fewer refills of Xanax. If this is it as far as your boyfriend?s weirdness goes, consider yourself lucky. Many people have little totems?a special coffee mug, a good luck charm?that calms them down. You need to decide if you actually want to raise this issue. But since your boyfriend knows you know, it would probably be better if this wasn?t a source of shame for him. Tell him you?re sorry you embarrassed him about the piece of blanket. Say you hope he feels he doesn?t have to hide it from you, and knowing this about him makes you feel better about letting him learn about your own little quirks. Say one of your things is hygiene, and you?d be more comfortable if he?d let you gently wash out the blanket from time to time. If the whole subject is too uncomfortable for him, then let it go for the time being. All you have to do in that case is limit your morning kisses to post-toothbrush ones.

A Routine Screening That Could Save Your Life

Feb 27, 2013 9:35am

Katie?s Take

March is National Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month, and Katie Couric wants you to get screened! After losing her husband, Jay Monahan, to colon cancer in 1998, Couric co-founded The Jay Monahan Center for Gastrointestinal Health in New York City. The clinic focuses on prevention, diagnosis, treatment and support for people suffering from gastrointestinal cancers.

Katie met with the Director of the Jay Monahan Center, Dr. Felice Schnoll-Sussman, to talk about the importance of getting screened, and about the center?s ?Make That Call? campaign ? which urges people 50 and older to get screened.

Of cancers that affect both men and women, colorectal cancer is the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths in the United States.? In 2013, 143,000 people will be diagnosed and 50,000 will not survive the disease. The statistics are startling, especially considering that the disease is preventable. The key is early detection through proper screening.

Everyone over the age of 50 should get screened. This is not to say that the disease does not affect people under 50, and so people should be aware of the symptoms of colorectal cancer. If you are experiencing bloating, unexpected weight gain, change in bowel habits, or blood in your stool, it is time to make an appointment. The screening is simple, painless and can be life-saving.

For more information, visit www.makethatcall.org. Katie and Dr. Schnoll-Sussman urge you to ?Make that Call? and get your screening today!

Injured NASCAR fan calls crash "scene from a horror movie"

ORLANDO, Florida (Reuters) - The last thing NASCAR fan Whitney Turner saw before she turned and ran was the undercarriage of Kyle Larson's race car flying toward her Saturday in the grandstands at the Daytona International Speedway.

"It was a scene from a horror movie," said Turner, 33, whose fibula bone on her right leg was shattered by flying debris.

Turner of Tell City, Indiana, was one of more than 30 fans injured in a multi-car accident on the last lap of the Nationwide Series race a day before Sunday's prestigious Daytona 500.

Turner is one of three fans seeking damages who this week signed on with Matt Morgan of the Orlando personal injury law firm Morgan & Morgan.

Turner's lawyer said, based on NASCAR history, "a lot of times they resolve these claims without having to go through litigation. So hopefully we can come to an amicable resolution on the value of these claims and move on."

The injuries happened when rookie driver Larson's car went airborne and sailed into the fence in the frightening crash, although he was able to climb out of the wreckage afterward.

Crews worked through the night to repair the fence so the Daytona 500 race could go on as planned. The speedway is owned by International Speedway Corporation

TRIED TO RUN FOR SAFETY

A lifelong NASCAR fan attending the race in Daytona for the first time, Turner said she had a front row seat and was standing as close as possible to the safety fence that separates fans from the track when the accident occurred.

Turner's seat was just three seats away from the fence's crossover gate, which is being looked at as possibly the spot where large debris entered the stands.

As the cars came around turn four, Turner said fans started yelling that there was a crash. Turner said she saw smoke, and cars turning around in the air, spewing debris.

"You can see them turn sideways and then all of a sudden they're getting closer. It happened so fast," she said, describing how she saw the belly of a car hit the fence as she turned away and tried to make a run for it.

Turner said she took about two steps back toward her seat when something knocked her down.

"The only thing I can remember is trying to stand back up and my leg, I could feel it snap," she said.

She recalled looking around and seeing a car engine on fire where a commercial video camera and a cameraman wearing a media identification tag stood moments earlier. She heard people moaning in their seats, and described the sounds around her.

"People yelling for help. 'There's a young boy.' 'Please come help us.' And I was screaming 'Help me! Medic! Medic!' ..... Then it all went like silent. Everyone was stunned," she said.

Medical personnel came to her aid and took her to the hospital. Doctors told her that, in addition to the fractured fibula, the debris sliced her Achilles tendon. Her leg was too swollen for a cast right after the accident but she expects to get one next week.

Turner, who works for a marketing firm, said she has been watching NASCAR races for as long as she can remember, and previously attended two races in North Carolina. Despite her injuries, Turner said she would return to the races.

"I can tell you I won't be in the first row again," she said.

NASCAR spokesman David Higdon said that, while the racing group does not discuss pending or potential litigation, "We'll likely provide an update on our next steps at our next race, which is this weekend in Phoenix."

A waiver on the back of the race tickets says that fans assume all risks, a disclaimer Morgan said was typical for sporting events and active locales such as ski resorts.

"Arguments can go both ways," as to whether the waiver absolves the company of all liability, Morgan said.

He said he had not yet determined whether courts had ruled on that issue.

"I don't believe, in my limited research, that NASCAR has many - if any - pending lawsuits against them right now," Morgan said.

He said he will focus attention on engineering studies on the safety fence at the Talladega Superspeedway after flying debris injured fans after a similar crash in 2009.

Home Depot leads Dow average higher

NEW YORK (AP) ? A jump in home sales and strong earnings from Home Depot helped the Dow claw back more than half of its losses from Monday. Improving consumer confidence also brought back buyers to the market.

The Dow Jones industrial average closed up 115.96 points, or 0.8 percent, to 13,900.13. The Dow fell 216 points the day before, its biggest drop in three months, on concern that the European debt crisis may flare up again. The index has moved 100 points or more on four out of the past five trading days.

The Standard & Poor's 500 index rose 9.09 points, or 0.6 percent, to 1,496.94. The Nasdaq composite was up 13.40 points, or 0.4 percent, at 3,129.65.

Home Depot, the biggest home improvement store chain in the country, jumped $3.64, or 5.7 percent, to $67.56 after reporting that its income rose 32 percent in the latest quarter thanks to strong U.S. sales and the cleanup that followed Superstorm Sandy. That made it the biggest gainer in the Dow, accounting for about 28 points, or about a quarter, of its advance.

"Companies on the whole, particularly U.S. companies, are doing well," Michael Mussio, a portfolio manager at FBB Capital, said.

Strong earnings from home improvement companies, such as Home Depot and Lowe's, which reported earnings Monday that beat Wall Street forecasts, compounded evidence that the U.S. housing market is maintaining its recovery, Mussio said. Also Tuesday, the government reported that sales of new homes jumped 16 percent last month to the highest level since July 2008.

The report boosted housing companies, which led the S&P 500 higher. PulteGroup rose $1.03, or 5.7 percent, to $19.05, edging out Home Depot as the biggest gainer in the index. D.R. Horton advanced 88 cents, or 4.12 percent, to $22.25 and Lennar Corp. rose $1.35, or 3.7 percent, to $38.01.

The rebounding housing sector has been an important factor behind a rally that pushed the Dow above 14,000 last week, close to its record high close of 14,164 reached in October 2007. The Dow is still up 6 percent this year, even after Monday's sell-off. The S&P 500 is up 5 percent.

Also Tuesday, a measure of consumer confidence rose sharply, reversing three months of declines, as shoppers began adjusting to a payroll tax hike last month.

Investors closely watched testimony by Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke. The Fed chairman said that the automatic government spending cuts due to take effect Friday would put a drag on the economy. He urged lawmakers and the White House to replace the cuts with longer-term policies to reduce the budget deficit.

Investors shouldn't be dissuaded from buying stocks by any flare-up in Europe's economic troubles, says Hans Olsen, a strategist at Barclays. The strategist says stocks should have a good year thanks to earnings growth and a pickup in corporate dealmaking.

Deals have accelerated sharply in the last three months and have involved household names including Heinz, Dell and American Airlines. Some of the acquired companies soared 20 percent or more when the deals are announced.

It's not yet clear how the recent see-saw in the market will affect investors. Individual investors have been creeping back into stocks since the start of this year, but the swings might yet unnerve them.

"The gyrations worry them, it scares them, even though the market is up," says Gabriel Fancher, an adviser at the Financial Group, a financial planner. "The market seems out of people's hands these days."

Tuesday's good news about the economy in the U.S. helped investors turn their focus away from Europe.

While U.S. market rose, European markets fell again as investors worried about Italy's political situation. The country is facing political gridlock after elections left Parliament with no clear-cut winner.

U.S. stocks slumped Monday after election results in Italy showed a race too close to call. That left investors fearful that the country, the euro region's third-largest, will struggle to form a government that can move forward with reforms to revive the economy, rekindling the region's debt crisis and worries over the viability of its shared currency, the euro.

Italy's main stock index dropped 4.9 percent Tuesday. The yield on Italy's benchmark government bond rose sharply, to 4.83 percent from 4.43 percent the day before, as investors sold them. That's still far below the 7 percent the yield traded at in January 2012, when confidence in Italy's finances was far lower. The euro was little changed against the dollar.

Other European indexes also fell, but not as much. Stocks fell 2.3 percent in Germany, 2.7 percent in France, and 1.3 percent in Britain.

In U.S. government bond trading, the yield on the 10-year Treasury note, which moves inversely to prices, rose two basis points to 1.88 percent.

Among other companies making big moves Tuesday;

? Tyson Foods fell 86 cents, or 3.7 percent, to $22.40 after it said that its fiscal second quarter has been tougher than expected because of lower margins in its beef and pork divisions. The nation's biggest meat company said it's still optimistic about its full-year results.

? Oneok fell $1.86, or 4 percent, to $44.34 after the natural gas company cut its distribution growth forecast for the next three years, citing expectations of lower sales volumes and prices of natural gas liquids.

? Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia fell 16 cents, or 5.3 percent, to $2.85 after the company said its fourth-quarter net income slid 74 percent as it continues to struggle with weak results at its publishing and broadcasting divisions.

? Macy's rose $1.33, or 3.5 percent, to $39.85 after its results beat analysts' forecasts.

Non-brittle glass possible: In probing mysteries of glass, researchers find a key to toughness

Feb. 26, 2013 ? In a paper published online Feb. 26 in the journal Nature Communications, a Yale University team and collaborators propose a way of predicting whether a given glass will be brittle or ductile -- a desirable property typically associated with metals like steel or aluminum -- and assert that any glass could have either quality.

Ductility refers to a material's plasticity, or its ability to change shape without breaking.

"Most of us think of glasses as brittle, but our finding shows that any glass can be made ductile or brittle," said Jan Schroers, a professor of mechanical engineering and materials science at Yale, who led the research with Golden Kumar, a professor at Texas Tech University. "We identified a special temperature that tells you whether you form a ductile or brittle glass."

The key to forming a ductile glass, they said, is cooling it fast. Exactly how fast depends on the nature of the specific glass.

Focusing on a new group of glasses known as bulk metallic glasses (BMGs) -- metal alloys, or blends, that can be extremely pliable yet also as strong as steel -- researchers studied the effect of a so-called critical fictive temperature (CFT) on the glasses' mechanical properties at room temperature.

When forming from liquid, there is a temperature at which glass becomes too viscous for reconfiguration and freezes. This temperature is called the glass transition temperature. Based on experiments with three representative bulk metallic glasses, the researchers said there is also, for each distinct alloy, a critical temperature that determines the brittleness or plasticity of the glass. This is the CFT.

Researchers said it's possible to categorize glasses in two groups -- those that will be brittle because in liquid form their CFT is above the glass transition temperature, and those that will be ductile, because in liquid form their CFT is below the glass transition temperature.

They previously thought a liquid's chemical composition alone would determine whether a glass would be brittle or ductile.

"That's not the case," Schroers said. "We can make any glass theoretically ductile or brittle. And it is the critical fictive temperature which determines how experimentally difficult it is to make a ductile glass. That is the major contribution of this work."

The finding applies theoretically to all glasses, not metallic glasses only, he said.

"A glass can have completely different properties depending on the rate at which you cool it," Schroers said. "If you cool it fast, it is very ductile, and if you cool it slow it?s very brittle. We anticipate that our finding will contribute to the design of ductile glasses, and in general contribute to a deeper understanding of glass formation."

LG Optimus G Pro: hands-on with the new Snapdragon 600 processor and 5.5-inch 1080p display (video)

LG Optimus G Pro handson with the new Snapdragon 600 processor and 5inch 1080p display video

The Pro version of last year's Optimus G comes in two flavors: Japan gets a 5-inch 1080p phone, while Korea (and the US) is treated to a 5.5-inch phone at the same resolution, but with Qualcomm's latest mobile chip, the Snapdragon 600. We're getting to grips with the Korean flavor here at MWC and while we're still waiting on a launch dates more specific than Q2, we couldn't help taking this particular G Pro for a spin.

While the original wasn't particularly lacking in the battery department, that increase in resolution has been fortunately accompanied by a bigger battery, up from 2,100mAh to 3,140mAh in the Korean edition and 3,000mAh in the Japanese. Design-wise, the lines are softer, more curved and -- if we're honest -- more like the Galaxy S III. There's now a curved physical home button lodged beneath the screen, with capacitive back and menu buttons either side of it that light up with the faintest glow. The back of the phone now gently curves into the rest of the phone, with that eye-catching "crystal reflection" effect now subtly shading into the sides. We've been aching to try out another phone with a next generation Snapdragon processor, and the 1.7GHz quad-core beast didn't disappoint in our brief time with the device. Navigation and basic tasks were buttery smooth, even with LG's slightly gaudy 3D animations and Emotion UI. While we're reserving full judgement for a review, we are impressed with how LG's decided to move forward with one of its most well-received smartphones in recent memory.

Members of first U.S team to top Everest reunite

BERKELEY, Calif. (AP) ? It might be hard to conceive now, in an era of extreme sports and ultra-light equipment, but there was a time when Americans who set out to conquer mountains engaged in a pursuit that was as lonely as it was dangerous.

But four men ? Norm Dyhrenfurth, now 94; Jim Whittaker, 84; Tom Hornbein, 82, and Dave Dingman, 76 ? remember. The leather boots that stayed wet for weeks. Oxygen canisters that weighed 15 pounds. The shrugs of indifference most of their countrymen gave a half-century ago to what it would take to get a U.S.-led mountaineering expedition to the top of Mt. Everest.

"Americans, when I first raised it, they said, 'Well, Everest, it's been done. Why do it again?'" Dyhrenfurth recalled Friday as he and three other surviving members of the 1963 expedition gathered in the San Francisco Bay area for a meeting honoring the 50th anniversary of their achievement.

The American Alpine Club is hosting lectures, film screenings, book-signings and a dinner this weekend recognizing the pioneering climbers and what their feat, captured in a Life magazine cover story, came to represent in the years after President John F. Kennedy honored the Everest team with a Rose Garden reception: the birth of mountaineering as a popular sport in the U.S.

"When they were talking about a reunion three years ago, I thought, who the hell cares about that? I figured we'd just get together for some beers," Dingman said between interviews with National Geographic, Outside magazine and the Alpine Club's oral history project. "It's turned into this big event, and I'm glad it has."

Whittaker, who lives in Seattle and went on to become chief executive of outdoors outfitter Recreational Equipment Inc., was the first American to summit Everest. He and his Sherpa companion, Nawang Gombu, reached the top of the world on May 1, 1963, a decade after New Zealand's Edmund Hillary and about six weeks after another climber on the U.S. expedition, Jake Breitenbach, died in an avalanche.

Memories of how close he came to his own death on Everest ? he and Gombu ran out of oxygen on the summit and had to climb up and back without water after their bottles froze ? infused every day of his life since with gratitude and child-like wonder, he said.

"I think I will probably take it with me into my next life, if I have one," Whittaker said.

Three weeks after Whittaker's ascent, two other Americans, Hornbein and the late Willi Unsoeld, became the first men ever to scale Everest via a more dangerous route on the mountain's west side. The next day, they descended by the southern route that Hillary, Whittaker and by then, two more members of the American team, had taken to the summit.

The adventure, which included spending the night without sleeping bags or tents at 28,000 feet, made them the first men ever to traverse the world's highest peak ? and cost Unsoeld nine frost-bitten toes.

Dingman has been lauded over the years for sacrificing his own chance to scale Everest to belay Hornbein, Unsoeld and two other climbers, Barry Bishop and Lute Jerstad, who had gotten stuck out in the open with them, back down to base camp.

Dingman never made it back to Everest. As a doctor in training, a Vietnam War draftee and then a physician with a young family, he never could find the time to make the trip. He said he had no regrets then and has none now.

"It would have made no difference to get two more people on to the summit, but if we had lost two or three people on the way down that would have been a very different story," he said.

Allow Windows Phone to access files on Windows desktop / servers [updated]

Homegroups and Workgroups are an integral part of any person's personal or professional network system. At the heart of the Windows experience since Vista, Microsoft have missed a trick by not incorporating this feature natively in Windows Phone 8. Android's Es File Explorer is one of the most downloaded apps and rightly so. For a device that is always on, I cannot see a better experience than lounging in your bed with your phone, and being able to play a video that is on the shared folder of you home PC without having to transfer it on via USB or installing any ridiculous software on either my PC or my phone. Such a tool would trump Android as I'm sure Microsoft can build a perfectly great file explorer that incorporates network file sharing. Get this done and it will also open up Windows Phone to be built on a phablet. But before that can even happen, WP8 must support higher resolution screens (1080p and above).

Virginia Landmarks: Old Stone Church in Centreville, Va.

Fairfax
-
There is an Old Stone Church in Centreville, Va. located off of one of the main roads that stretches across Fairfax County. Still an active parish today, the church is a historical landmark.
Northern Virginia is deeply rooted in Early American history. As settlers arrived in the 17th and 18th centuries to the region, the area known today as "Fairfax County" links back to those early land establishments during the Colonial and Revolutionary War years.

Fairfax County is named for Thomas, sixth Lord Fairfax, Baron of Cameron who first arrived on North American soil in 1735 when he inherited a large parcel of land.

Fast forward to the 19th century and Fairfax County, along with surrounding counties, will again be noted in history books due to the prominent American Civil War battles and other events that took place in the area.

There are many historical landmarks from those earlier days that remain, some are well-known and others, less so. This writer routinely tries to seek out not only the well-known and highly toured locations in the region, but also some of the perhaps lesser known landmarks.

The "Old Stone Church" was originally built in the early half of the 19th Century. It was dismantled during the American Civil War and rebuilt shortly after the war. Today the church remains as both an active parish and a historical landmark.

One such landmark is the "Old Stone Church". I had heard there was a historical church in Centreville, which is located on the western end of Fairfax County, and decided to take a ride over to see where it was. What I found was a stone church with a historical marker out front that indicated the structure had been used as a hospital by the Union Army, twice.

The first time was during the first battle of Manassas in 1861 when Assistant Surgeon David L. Magruder commanded the building for medical treatments. According to the sign posted outside the church, Magruder would later write he ?took possession of a stone church, pleasantly situated in a grove of timber, directly ? to the right of the road we had passed on advancing to the attack.? The church was used again a year later during the Second Battle of Manassas. It also served as a Confederate hospital, according to the posted sign, who took control of the Old Stone Church depended on where it fell as battle lines changed.

(AP) ? Far from the courtroom drama that has gripped South Africa, the family of Oscar Pistorius' slain girlfriend has struggled with its own private deluge of grief, frustration and bewilderment.

The victim's relatives also harbor misgivings about efforts by the Olympian's family to reach out to them with condolences.

Pistorius, meanwhile, spent Saturday at his uncle's home in an affluent suburb of Pretoria, the South African capital, after a judge released him on bail following days of testimony that transfixed South Africa and much of the world. He was charged with premeditated murder in the shooting death of girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp in the early hours of Valentine's Day, but the athlete says he killed her accidentally, opening fire after mistaking her for an intruder in his home.

"We are extremely thankful that Oscar is now home," his uncle, Arnold Pistorius, said in a statement that also acknowledged the law must run its course. "What happened has changed our lives irrevocably."

The Pistorius family took steps to lower its profile on social media after someone hacked into the Twitter account of his older brother, Carl, family spokesman Janine Hills said.

"Carl did not tweet this afternoon, out of respect to Oscar and Reeva," Hills said in a statement. "We are busy cancelling all the social media sites for both Oscar's brother and his sister."

Mike Steenkamp, Reeva's uncle, told The Associated Press that the family of the double-amputee athlete initially did not send condolences or try to contact the bereaved parents, but had since sought to reach out in what he described as a poorly timed way. After Pistorius was released on bail in what amounted to a victory for the defense, Arnold Pistorius said the athlete's family was relieved but also in mourning "with the family" of Reeva Steenkamp.

"Everybody wants to jump up with joy," Mike Steenkamp said, speculating on the mood of Pistorius' family after the judge's decision. "I think it was just done in the wrong context, completely."

A South African newspaper, the Afrikaans-language Beeld, quoted the mother of Reeva Steenkamp, a 29-year-old model, law school graduate and participant in a television reality show, as saying the family had received a bouquet of flowers and a card from the Pistorius family.

"Yes, but what does it mean? Nothing," June Steenkamp said, according to the Saturday edition of Beeld. She also said Pistorius' family, including sister Aimee, a somber presence on the bench behind the Olympian during his court hearings in the past week, must be "devastated" and had done nothing wrong.

"They are not to blame," June Steenkamp said. According to Beeld, she said she had hoped to plan a wedding for her daughter one day.

In an affidavit, 26-year-old Oscar Pistorius said he was "absolutely mortified" by the death of "my beloved Reeva," and he frequently sobbed in court during the several days during which his bail application was considered. However, prosecutor Gerrie Nel, suggested in a scathing criticism that Pistorius was actually distraught because his vaunted career was now in peril and he was in grave trouble with the law.

"It doesn't matter how much money he has and how good his legal team is, he will have to live with his conscience if he allows his legal team to lie for him," Barry Steenkamp, Reeva's father, told Beeld.

"But if he is telling the truth, then perhaps I can forgive him one day," the father said. "If it didn't happen the way he said it did, he must suffer, and he will suffer ... only he knows."

Barry Steenkamp suffered "heavy trauma" at the loss of his daughter and his remarks to the newspaper partly reflect how he is working through it, said his brother, Mike Steenkamp.

Steenkamp was cremated in a funeral ceremony on Feb. 19 in her family's hometown of Port Elizabeth on South Africa's southern coast. Mike Steenkamp delivered a statement about the family's grief to television cameras, at one point breaking down in tears.

The three-story house where Pistorius is staying with his aunt and uncle lies on a hill with a view of Pretoria. It has a large swimming pool and an immaculate garden.

Pistorius was born without fibula bones due to a congenital defect and had his legs amputated at 11 months. He has run on carbon-fiber blades and was originally banned from competing against able-bodied peers because many argued that his blades gave him an unfair advantage. He was later cleared to compete. He is a multiple Paralympic medalist, but he failed to win a medal at the London Olympics, where he ran in the 400 meter race and on South Africa's 4x400 relay team.

Singer Mindy McCready dies in apparent suicide | The Salt Lake ...

HEBER SPRINGS, Ark. ? Perhaps there was one heartbreak too many for Mindy McCready.

The former country star apparently took her own life on Sunday at her home in Heber Springs, Ark. Authorities say McCready died of a suspected self-inflicted gunshot to the head and an autopsy is planned. She was 37, and left behind two young sons.

McCready had attempted suicide at least three times since 2005, as she struggled to cope amid a series of tumultuous public events that marked much of her adult life.

Speaking to The Associated Press in 2010, McCready smiled wryly while talking about the string of issues she?d dealt with over the last half-decade.

"It is a giant whirlwind of chaos all the time," she said of her life. "I call my life a beautiful mess and organized chaos. It?s just always been like that. My entire life things have been attracted to me and vice versa that turn into chaotic nightmares or I create the chaos myself. I think that?s really the life of a celebrity, of a big, huge, giant personality."

This time it seems the whirlwind overwhelmed McCready.

Her death comes a month after that of David Wilson, her longtime boyfriend and the father of her youngest son. He is believed to have shot himself on the same porch of the home they shared in Heber Springs, a small vacation community of large lakefront houses about 65 miles north of Little Rock. His death also was investigated as a suicide.

It was the most difficult moment in a life full of them. McCready issued a statement last month lamenting his death. And she called him her soul mate and a caregiver to her sons in an interview with NBC?s "Today" show.

"I just keep telling myself that the more suffering that I go through, the greater character I?ll have," she said, according to a transcript of the interview.

Like so many times before, McCready showed a little toughness in the midst of a personal storm, again endearing herself to her fans. But as usual, the brave face for the camera hid a much more complicated internal struggle that surfaced publicly time and again over the last 10 years.

story continues below

This time, along with her remembrances of finding Wilson as he lay dying, she also answered questions about whether they?d argued earlier that evening about an affair and if she?d shot him.

"Oh, my God," the "Today" transcript reads. "No. Oh, my God. No. He was my life. We were each other?s life."

It?s unclear what circumstances led to McCready taking her own life, but it appears she was struggling again with twin issues that have persisted for years ? substance abuse and the custody of her children. She checked into court-ordered rehab and gave her children up to foster care earlier this month after her father asked a judge to intervene, saying she?d stopped taking care of herself and her sons and was abusing alcohol and prescription drugs.

It?s not clear where her sons, 6-year-old Zander and infant Zayne, were Sunday.

A deputy stationed outside McCready?s home Sunday night referred questions to the Cleburne County sheriff, who was unavailable. Yellow crime-scene tape cordoned off the front yard and a dark-colored pickup truck sat in the driveway.

News of McCready?s death spread quickly Sunday night on Twitter, with major country stars paying their respects to the onetime Nashville darling.

"Too much tragedy to overcome. R.I.P Mindy McCready," wrote Natalie Maines of The Dixie Chicks.

And Carrie Underwood added: "I grew up listening to Mindy McCready...so sad for her family tonight. Many prayers are going out to them... ."

On Monday, neighbors who never met McCready but knew well of her very public struggles expressed grief.

Jim Jones, 58, said police had already blocked off McCready?s house Sunday evening when he and his wife pulled up to their weekend home down the street. People knew McCready lived in town, but many homeowners live only part-time in Heber Springs, particularly in the warmer months for the boating, fishing and golfing.

Teen killed after sister attends Obama gun speech

The sister of one of the students who attended President Obama's speech on gun violence Friday was shot and killed while walking with a group of friends. Police say the gunfire was meant for someone else in the group. NBC's Brian Williams reports.

By Alexandria Fisher and Summer Nettles, NBCChicago.com

Police are questioning two men in the murder of an 18-year-old Chicago woman who was killed Friday in a north suburb, officials said Sunday.

Janay McFarlane was shot and killed while leaving a store in North Chicago, hours after her younger sister attended President Barack Obama?s speech on Friday addressing gun violence in Chicago.

McFarlane's mother, Angela Blakely, said McFarlane was not the intended target and that the bullet was intended for a friend she was with. Blakely said McFarlane had asked two male friends to go with her to the store because she didn't feel safe walking alone.

Read more at NBCChicago.com

Two men followed McFarlane and her friends out of the store, police said, and one of them fired nine rounds, missing his target and hitting McFarlane in the head.

McFarlane's family said she talked a lot about the death of another slain teen, Hadiya Pendleton, in the days before her sister attended Obama?s Chicago speech at Hyde Park Academy High School.

McFarlane?s younger sister, 14-year-old Destini Warren, who attended the speech, recalled McFarlane saying she was, ?excited for [Destini]? to see the president.

Warren said the president?s speech ?really connected to what was going on? and she ?didn?t expect that to happen.?

Warren also did not expect the speech to relate to her so personally.

"We could go to each other for everything," she said. "We were more of best friends than we were sisters."

Blakely said McFarlane was "her little buddy."

"Me and Janay were so close," she said. "It was always 'mommy go with me' or 'mommy let's do this.'"

McFarlane was a senior at the World Changers Leadership Academy and was scheduled to graduate in June. She had plans to go to culinary school.

Blakely said she and McFarlane were supposed to go prom dress shopping later this week.

McFarlane is survived by her sister, mother and 3-month-old son, Jayden.

??? Faced with opposition from spearfishers, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission has tabled a decision to create sport fish and game fish designations for some saltwater species. At a meeting last week in Orlando, commissioners directed staff to develop catch-and-release provisions for bonefish and tarpon. The FWC is expected to gather public input and then consider a draft proposal at its April meeting. The sport fish and game fish designations were aimed at enhancing protection and limiting harvest of some of Florida?s important recreational fisheries.

??? The South Atlantic Fishery Management Council is seeking public comment on an amendment that may lift the Nov.?1-through-March?31 recreational closure of vermilion snapper. The most recent stock assessment shows that overfishing for vermilions has ended. However, the amendment might impose some additional restrictions on red porgy, which are still overfished. The council is expected to forward the amendment to the Secretary of Commerce for final adoption at its March?4-8 meeting in St. Simon?s Island, Ga. Public comment will be accepted through March?4. Comments may be faxed to 843-769-4520 or emailed to SGRegAm18Comments@safmc.net.

??? Water sports aficionados fishing for an excuse to stay in South Florida following Monday?s conclusion of the Miami International Boat Show and Yacht & Brokerage Show don?t have to look too hard. The Blue Wild 2013 ? a dive and marine art expo ? will be held Feb.?23-24 at the Broward County Convention Center. Organizer Sheri Daye of Boca Raton says the event will appeal to anyone interested in the world?s oceans. ?I?m trying to dispel the notion this is only about freediving and spearfishing,? Daye said. ?My intent is to make it well-rounded for anyone who loves the ocean.? Besides dive gear and travel exhibits, the expo will feature a variety of speakers and workshops, including Miami shark wrangler Manny Puig; freediving instructors Kirk Krack and Martin Stepanek; Mote Marine Laboratory founder Eugenie Clark; and renowned underwater videographer Stan Waterman. There?s also an extensive marine art exhibit, a photo and video contest, and a raffle and auction. Information: thebluewild.com or call 561-715-0247.

??? The International Game Fish Association has added eight species to its two-year-old All-Tackle Length record program. The program recognizes superior catches in both salt and freshwater based on length rather than weight, and requires fish to be released alive. The new additions, effective March 1, are: black grouper; cero mackerel; Dentex; gray snapper; Madai; Nile perch; Orinoco peacock; and Papuan black snapper. The record-keeping organization also has added new Slam and Trophy clubs, also effective March 1. They are: the 50-pound Dolphinfish Club; the 30-pound Muskellunge Club; and a new Offshore Grand Slam Club. Visit igfa.org for more information.

Rohrabacher, GOP Blast Obama for Not Protecting Iranian Dissidents

Lawmakers complained on Sunday that President Barack Obama had failed to protect Iranian dissidents from persecution by Tehran following a deadly attack on their camp near Baghdad, and urged they be allowed back to their long-time base in Iraq.

A congressional delegation led by Dana Rohrabacher, chairman of the Republican-controlled House subcommittee on Europe, said that the Obama administration should not have backed the movement of members of Iranian dissident group Mujahadin-e-Khalq, or MEK, to a place where they would not be safe.

At least five people were killed in a Feb. 9 rocket attack on their base in the former U.S. military compound "Camp Liberty" in the western part of the Iraqi capital. The attack was condemned by the United Nations.

"It was unethical for the United States to have endorsed the relocation of the people whom we promised to protect to Camp Liberty, where we knew they would not have proper protection, just because it wants to please Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki and the ruling mullahs of Iran," the delegation said in statement after meeting Iranian dissident leaders in Paris.

The MEK, which calls for the overthrow of Iran's clerical rulers and fought alongside the forces of former Sunni dictator Saddam Hussein in the Iran-Iraq war in the 1980s, was relocated last year from its long-time Iraqi home in exile at Camp Ashraf.

The MEK is no longer welcome in Iraq under the Shi'ite Muslim-led government, which came to power after U.S.-led forces invaded and toppled Saddam in 2003.

But some U.S. politicians view it as a potential opposition force to replace Tehran's rulers and have taken up their cause in Washington. The congressional delegation issued its statement after meeting with Maryam Rajavi, who heads the Paris-based National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI).

"Iran needs regime change and the MEK can help bring it about," the congressional delegation said, sharply criticizing the U.N. mission in Iraq for failing to grant more MEK members in Camp Liberty the status of refugees.

"The U.S. Government, the Secretary General of the United Nations, and the UN High Commissioner for Refugees should give top priority to resolving the security situation of the residents of Camp Liberty - which can be ensured by their return to Camp Ashraf."
