Anthony Pettis replaces injured T.J. Grant, setting up anticipated rematch with Benson Henderson
Anthony Pettis was supposed to open August fighting Jose Aldo for the UFC featherweight title. Instead, after two injuries, Pettis will instead close the month rematching Benson Henderson at UFC 164 on Aug. 31 in Milwaukee for the UFC lightweight belt.
Pettis defeated Henderson in the final event in World Extreme Cagefighting history, lifting that organization's belt from Henderson by pulling off the now-legendary "Showtime kick" in the waning moments of a close fight. Pettis leaped up against the cage, pushed off and blasted a surprise Henderson in the head with a kick.
That move, one of the most spectacular in modern mixed martial arts history, lifted Pettis to the WEC title.
Henderson later went on to win the UFC lightweight belt and was supposed to defend it against T.J. Grant at UFC 164. But, according to UFC president Dana White, Grant suffered an injury and had to withdraw.
Grant tweeted that he suffered a concussion while practicing jiu-jitsu and had to withdraw. He also tweeted that it was not a conspiracy by the UFC to get Pettis onto the card.
MMA Junkie first reported Grant's injury and the coach of Pettis as his replacement.
Pettis coach Duke Roufus said Pettis' knee "is feeling great after rehab."
White was ecstatic to be able to make the bout and said he thinks the UFC is set up for a memorable finish to 2013.
"If all of these fights we have set hold up and no one else gets hurt, this is going to be the baddest string of fights we've ever done in a six-month period," White said. "Without question, this will be the best second-half of a year in UFC history."
White noted that the string began last week with Chris Weidman's stunning upset win over middleweight champion Anderson Silva at UFC 162 in Las Vegas.

"We'd love to have him on that New Year's Eve card in Vegas," White said. "That would be sick. We're working on that, but all that stuff Anderson has going on is why the Super Bowl card is still a possibility."
Pettis could be reached for comment on Friday, but Roufus was with Pettis when he was offered the fight with Henderson. He was thrilled, not only for the title opportunity but for the chance to do it in Milwaukee, his hometown.
"Anthony and I received the news together here," Roufus said. "He can't wait to get the UFC championship. Ben is a great fighter, but Anthony is a special fighter who will beat Ben again."
White said one of the reasons he likes Pettis so much is that he is willing to fight anyone at any time. He said Pettis had no concern about having started to get ready to fight at featherweight and then having to go up and fight at lightweight.
Pettis, he said, just loves to compete in big fights.
"What I love about this guy is he doesn't give a [expletive] about stupid [expletive] like whether it's at 145 or 155 or where it is or when it is or any of that," White said. "He has the attitude, 'I'm the best. I'm going to win. I don't care when or where. Let's do it.' Those are the kind of guys I love."
White also said he is in talks to re-sign heavyweight Roy Nelson, whose contract expired in June after a loss to Stipe Miocic at UFC 161 in Winnipeg. White said if he re-signs Nelson in time, he plans to pair him with Daniel Cormier at UFC 166 on the Velasquez-dos Santos III undercard.
Nelson and Cormier have had a feud on social media and have been eager to fight. Cormier is also Velasquez's training partner, close friend and wrestling coach.

UK parliament wins veto over any decision to arm Syrian rebels
LONDON (Reuters) - Britain's parliament backed a motion on Thursday requiring Prime Minister David Cameron to give it a veto over any future move to arm Syrian rebels, in a symbolic vote the government said it would heed.
Britain says it has not yet taken any decision to arm rebels fighting to topple President Bashar al-Assad, but its role in helping to lift a European Union arms embargo on Syria in May fuelled speculation it was planning to do just that.
The lower house of parliament voted by 114-1 to back a motion requiring the government to seek its "explicit prior consent" for any future decision to provide lethal assistance.
Though symbolic, the move is significant as it means Cameron will find it almost impossible not to give parliament a vote on the issue, something government sources say would amount to an effective veto over any decision to supply arms.
Ministers expect the 650-member lower house to vote against sending arms if the issue arises, said one government source.
Many lawmakers in Cameron's Conservative Party say they are worried a decision to arm the moderate opposition in Syria would escalate and widen the conflict and risk weapons falling into the hands of Islamist extremists.
"The government has discussed the option of arming the rebels. This would be a major policy change. This debate allows us to mark the government's card," said John Baron, a Conservative lawmaker who secured Thursday's vote.
The uprising led by Syria's Sunni Muslim majority is increasingly rallying around Islamist appeals as Assad's forces notch up battlefield gains against the rebels in a conflict that has killed more than 100,000 people since 2011.

FDA sets new limits on arsenic in apple juice
WASHINGTON (AP) ? Parents who have been fretting over the low levels of arsenic found in apple juice can feel better about buying one of their kids' favorite drinks.
The Food and Drug Administration is setting a new limit on the level of arsenic allowed in apple juice, after more than a year of public pressure from consumer groups worried about the contaminant's effects on children. Nationwide, apple juice is second only to orange juice in popularity, according to industry groups.
Studies have shown that the juice contains very low levels of arsenic, a cancer-causing agent found in everything from water to soil to pesticides. The FDA has monitored arsenic in apple juice for decades and has long said the levels are not dangerous to consumers, in particular small children who favor fruit juice.
But now the agency is putting in place a strict standard on how much arsenic is acceptable in apple juice, limiting the amount to the same level currently permitted in drinking water.
Under the new regulation, apple juice containing more than 10 parts per billion could be removed from the market and companies could face legal action. Agency officials stressed that the vast majority of juices on the market are already below the threshold.
"Overall the supply of apple juice is very safe and does not represent a threat to public health," said FDA Commissioner Dr. Margaret Hamburg, in an interview with The Associated Press. "We decided to put forward this proposed action level to give guidance to industry and to assure ongoing safety and quality."
An FDA analysis of dozens of apple juice samples last year found that 95 percent were below the new level.
The standard specifically targets inorganic arsenic ? the type found in pesticides ? which can be toxic and may pose a cancer risk if consumed at high levels or over a long period. Organic arsenic occurs naturally in dirt and soil and passes through the body quickly without causing harm, according to the FDA.
In 2008 FDA regulators set a "level of concern" for arsenic at 23 parts per billion in apple juice. The agency has the authority to seize juice that exceeds that level.
But agency officials played down the significance of the older figure this week, calling it a "back of the envelope" calculation that was used to assess one juice shipment detained at the border.
"It was not a full blown, science-based number," said Michael Taylor, FDA's deputy commissioner for foods.
The FDA's new number is based on lifetime exposure to arsenic and the potential for long-term cancer risk. Taylor says the number reflects a very cautious approach, since it's unclear how much arsenic exposure can trigger the disease.
"There isn't a known threshold for the carcinogenic effect, so we assume the possibility of effects all the way down to the lowest dose," Taylor said.
The agency will take comments on the draft regulation for 60 days before making it binding.
Consumers Union, publisher of Consumer Reports, last year called for a limit as low as 3 parts per billion. While the FDA didn't go that far, the group still praised the agency for taking action.
"While we had proposed a lower limit, we think this is a perfectly good first step to bring apple juice in line with the current drinking water limits," said Urvashi Rangan, the group's director for consumer safety.
While the Environmental Protection Agency sets arsenic limits for drinking water, there have never been similar standards for most foods and beverages. The FDA is also considering new limits on arsenic in rice, which is thought to have higher levels than most foods because it is grown in water on the ground, optimal conditions for absorbing the contaminant.
"We don't have standards like this in most foods, so it's an important precedent," Rangan said.
Environmental groups like Food and Water Watch have also lobbied the FDA on the issue. And television's Dr. Mehmet Oz made arsenic a national issue in 2011 when he raised an alarm ? some say a false alarm ? over apple juice, based on tests his show commissioned by a private lab.
All of the experts ? including the government and the consumer advocates ? agree that drinking small amounts of apple juice isn't harmful. The concern involves the effects of drinking large amounts of juice over long periods of time.
Another point of agreement is that children under 6 shouldn't be drinking much juice anyway, because it's high in calories. Health experts say children under 6 shouldn't drink any more than 6 ounces of juice a day ? about the size of a juice box. Infants under 6 months shouldn't drink any juice at all.
The American Academy of Pediatrics said Friday children should be encouraged to eat whole fruit adding, "it is not necessary to offer children any juice to have a well-balanced, healthy diet."
The Juice Products Association, which represents juice producers, said it is reviewing the FDA's proposal and risk assessment.
"Apple juice producers, as well as the FDA, want people to know they can be confident that apple juice is safe," said Rick Cristol, the group's president, in a statement.

Topping tech headlines during the July 4 weekend was news that Microsoft is officially pulling the plug on its MSN TV service at the end of September.
The company acquired the service ? then called WebTV ? in April 1997, and turned it into a $200-plus set-top box that provided Internet access via a television for $20 per month. But advances in Internet technology, particularly for the TV, has made MSN TV obsolete, so the service will shut down on Sept. 30.
Meanwhile, hardware giant Samsung took a hit last week after an earnings miss. Though its operating income - 9.5 trillion won ($8.3 billion) - is an impressive-sounding number, analysts were hoping for a figure above 10 billion won. Samsung could be the victim of an oversaturated smartphone market, though some believe low-end devices are encroaching on the field. The phone maker's considerable marketing campaign for the Galaxy S 4 and its 1,400 specialized Samsung stores popping up inside of Best Buy retail shops could also be a factor.
In other news, the Apple App Store is celebrating its five-year anniversary this week, commemorating the occasion by reminding people of some of its biggest milestones ? like the store's one billionth download in April 2009, the premiere of the wildly successful Angry Birds in February 2010, and 50 billion downloads on May 16 of this year. But some "milestones" are conspicuously missing from Apple's list, like app removals and other black eyes.
