Like Mike? Peers see LeBron for own greatness

(AP) ? LeBron James changed his jersey number, won an NBA championship and still gets inevitably compared to Michael Jordan at nearly every opportunity.

With James producing at a record-setting clip that no one in league history had reached, just as Jordan's 50th birthday approaches this weekend, classifying James' place in the league couldn't be a hotter topic.

James wants no part of it, posting on Twitter that he's "not MJ." And his peers say it's time to back off all the comparisons.

"It's simple. There will never be another Michael Jordan," said Miami Heat teammate Dwyane Wade, who grew up in Chicago watching Jordan's games on WGN. "He was the first to do a lot of things. Whenever you're the first, there can never be another.

"But you know what? That guy down there (James), he's in the beginning of starting his own path. There will be someone who will be compared to the next LeBron James, but there will never be another one of him. Certain guys are that special and that unique."

James entered Thursday night's showcase game at Oklahoma City on an NBA record six-game streak of games with at least 30 points while shooting 60 percent or better.

Doing something that even Jordan never did on his way to six NBA titles made James the buzz of the league heading into All-Star weekend, which also happens to be when Jordan hits the big 5-0.

But if the run were to end, James said it wouldn't matter to him.

"I don't think about it. I never cared about my individual stats. All I care about is winning," James said. "That's all that matters to me. I don't put no pressure on any stat or record. It just happens."

And just because LeBron is adding to his own lore doesn't mean that it has to come at the expense of Jordan's greatness.

"I think those two guys are different," three-time scoring champion Kevin Durant said. "LeBron's a once-in-a-lifetime type of player. I think people really were waiting for him to win the championship to compare, just like any other great player. ... It's not a knock on LeBron or taking anything from him, because the stuff he's done is unreal as well, but it's kind of hard to compare anybody to Michael Jordan."

At the Heat's shootaround, James was asked to reflect on the first time he met Jordan. It happened during James' sophomore year of high school, when he visited a spot where Jordan worked out in the offseason in Chicago.

He can't remember anything Jordan said to him ? or if the two spoke ? but he recalled watching Jordan's every move during what he called a chance to meet a "hero."

James started his NBA career wearing Jordan's No. 23, but switched to 6 later and suggested that no one in the league should wear 23 again out of tribute to MJ. The plan never stuck.

And while establishing his own identity, James still finds himself dodging Jordan's impressive shadow.

"I always say you can't compare guys until both guys are finished playing," Durant said. "You'll see when Kobe Bryant's done playing how you can compare him to Michael, Magic Johnson and LeBron, stuff like that. But while they're playing, I don't think you can really compare them."

This stretch of proficiency is just another phase in James' ascent. Where he'll end up, whether he'll ever approach all those titles James, Wade and Chris Bosh predicted upon their creation in Miami, is still to be determined.

"Every year, he's come back a better player for 10 years now. That's remarkable in itself. Not a lot of guys can say that. I'm not so sure he's at his peak, which is frightening," said Oklahoma City coach Scott Brooks, a Jordan contemporary. "He's one of the best players in the game's history, not just the current generation of players, of all the players.

"What he is able to do at the level that he does it on both ends of the floor, usually don't see. You don't see it often."

Wade said he believes James' transformation to an even better version of the NBA's top player started last season after a difficult transition from beloved star in Cleveland to the league's most-hated man in Miami.

"Once last year came and he was able to bring his family down to Miami and really get comfortable in the surroundings, the new environment, he started getting back to being the LeBron James that we all became accustomed to," Wade said.

"It's not saying the year before that he wasn't special. Any time he puts on the jersey and he steps on the court, he's a special player, but now he's just even more confident. He's at that age, at 28 years old, where everything just comes together."

Remember that Jordan, although he hadn't been in the league as long after playing college ball at North Carolina, was 28 when he won his first championship in 1991. Wade would caution that this is only the start of James' very own, unique story.

"MJ's legacy at 50 years old is still going strong," Wade said, "and LeBron James' legacy will be the same."

Scientists dive into innovative cancer research

Developing studies from a USF research team may suggest that the same technologies used to train deep-sea divers could lead to breakthroughs in cancer research.

The Hyperbaric Biomedical Research Laboratory, part of the department of molecular pharmacology and physiology at USF, spearheaded by Drs. Dominic D?Agostino and Csilla Ari with three Ph.D. students, started researching why divers have seizures during diving expeditions.

The team has since been able to apply their findings to other health problems, such as cancer and ALS research, otherwise known as Lou Gehrig?s disease.

One of the Ph.D. students, Angela Bennett, said the research she and her colleagues are working on is potentially revolutionary, and that the scientific community is beginning the change their outlook on ways to treat cancer.

?It?s nice to do research you can really get inspired by,? Bennett said. ?I think that (our research) is a change in the way we?ve been dealing with cancer as an issue. There?s kind of a revolution in how people are viewing how to treat cancer, and I think there?s a lot of hope for the future in this kind of research.?

The research stems from the lab?s unique possession of a hyperbaric chamber, which is used to acclimate divers to deep-sea conditions, where oxygen has trouble effectively getting to the brain.

Funding for the lab?s experiments comes primarily from the Office of Navy Research (ONR).? The ONR was interested in the lab for various reasons.? One of these reasons is to develop and test a mitigation strategy against the central nervous system?s oxygen toxicity, which can cause divers to have a seizure while underwater.

These seizures, D?Agostino said, are a common problem experienced by Navy Seal

divers.

?The navy is interested in why these seizures occur, and they?re interested in ways to predict an oncoming seizure, because they happen without warning,? D?Agostino said. ?Having a seizure underwater can be quickly fatal, so they want to identify a biomarker that can identify ? if it?s going to happen.?

The lab has developed a synthetic drug-like food made up of ketone esters, which divers ? and cancer patients ? can take as part of what D?Agostino refers to as ?metabolic therapy.? The benefit of using this type of food to prevent seizures rather than a typical drug, he said, is that ketone esters are a source of calories and can provide a source of energy for the brain and muscles of the person that consumes the food, reducing the likelihood of an oxygen-induced seizure.

?It can potentially enhance warfighter performance, cognitive performance and physical performance,? D?Agostino said.

The lab?s hyperbaric chamber allows researchers to simulate any diving scenario that divers may face while underwater. The information gained by the team while using the chamber has also been applied to tests on cancer cells.

D?Agostino explained that when a tumor grows, it grows rapidly and the inside of the tumor becomes low in oxygen. It?s the signal of the low oxygen, he said, that actually causes cells to secrete substances that make the tumor grow faster.

If the team is able to provide oxygen to the tumor, they can kill it and prevent further growth. In the process of looking at brain cells, the team looked at cancer cells as well, and found that when they expose cancer cells to high levels of oxygen, little bumps appear, which occurs when the cells are preparing to die.

D?Agostino said he was impressed by the discovery and at first thought someone else much have made the discovery in the past.

This discovery led to the team taking on more projects in their research.

Bennett?s work includes using an animal model that had metastatic cancer, what D?Agnostino calls ?the worst case scenario cancer?. A demonstration of this model shows that the team could dramatically shrink the tumor and extend survival in the animal model.

D?Agostino said the standard of care for today?s cancer patients has failed, especially for more aggressive cancers such as metastatic cancer. Primarily pharmaceutical companies drive the cancer research industry, and D?Agostino said there is little incentive for the companies to study ketone supplements in the way that the team does.

The team is also using its research to apply the metabolic therapy to provide therapeutic relief with those who are receiving treatments for ALS, or Lou Gehrig?s disease. Ari said the team began research on ALS last October, and that there isn?t much data available so it?s too soon to come to a specific conclusion about the performance of the therapy.

The first phase of the ALS research conducted tested if the treatment option is comfortable for the animals. Ari said the test resulted in the animals eating well. The team has also been testing motor performance, and is currently working to increase the lifespan of the animals that are being given the therapy.

The team is beginning work on the second phase of the ALS research, which is projected to be complete in April.

Ari said will include a greater amount of test subjects to gather more data.

D?Agostino said more cancer researchers are beginning to notice this about the team?s research. He said the metabolic therapy that his team has developed might be an inexpensive, non-toxic alternative that pushes the patient to be more conscious of their health.

?The scientific rationale of what we?re doing is very strong and it?s growing,? D?Agostino said. ?It?s not like pseudoscience, it?s something that we can validate and produce scientific theory behind while we observe the effects that we?re observing ?I t?s also inspiring that it puts treatment to some degree in the patient?s hands themselves I think a lot of patients feel very hopeless about their treatment and feel there isn?t a whole lot they can personally do, and parts of our (metabolic) therapy, such as our diet therapy, can really empower them, along side doing whatever their doctor recommends.?

Why some people don't learn well: EEG shows insufficient processing of information to be learned

Feb. 13, 2013 ? The reason why some people are worse at learning than others has been revealed by a research team from Berlin, Bochum, and Leipzig, operating within the framework of the Germany-wide network "Bernstein Focus State Dependencies of Learning." They have discovered that the main problem is not that learning processes are inefficient per se, but that the brain insufficiently processes the information to be learned.

The scientists trained the subjects' sense of touch to be more sensitive. In subjects who responded well to the training, the EEG revealed characteristic changes in brain activity, more specifically in the alpha waves. These alpha waves show, among other things, how effectively the brain exploits the sensory information needed for learning. "An exciting question now is to what extent the alpha activity can be deliberately influenced with biofeedback," says PD Dr. Hubert Dinse from the Neural Plasticity Lab of the Ruhr-Universit?t Bochum. "This could have enormous implications for therapy after brain injury or, quite generally, for the understanding of learning processes." The research team from the Ruhr-Universit?t, the Humboldt Universit?t zu Berlin, Charit? -- Universit?tsmedizin Berlin and the Max Planck Institute (MPI) for Human Cognitive and Brain Sciences reported their findings in the Journal of Neuroscience.

Learning without attention: passive training of the sense of touch

How well we learn depends on genetic aspects, the individual brain anatomy, and, not least, on attention. "In recent years we have established a procedure with which we trigger learning processes in people that do not require attention," says Hubert Dinse. The researchers were, therefore, able to exclude attention as a factor. They repeatedly stimulated the participants' sense of touch for 30 minutes by electrically stimulating the skin of the hand. Before and after this passive training, they tested the so-called "two-point discrimination threshold," a measure of the sensitivity of touch. For this, they applied gentle pressure to the hand with two needles and determined the smallest distance between the needles at which the patient still perceived them as separate stimuli. On average, the passive training improved the discrimination threshold by twelve percent -- but not in all of the 26 participants. Using EEG, the team studied why some people learned better than others.

Imaging the brain state using EEG: the alpha waves are decisive

The cooperation partners from Berlin and Leipzig, PD Dr. Petra Ritter, Dr. Frank Freyer, and Dr. Robert Becker recorded the subjects' spontaneous EEG before and during passive training. They then identified the components of the brain activity related to improvement in the discrimination test. The alpha activity was decisive, i.e., the brain activity was in the frequency range 8 to 12 hertz. The higher the alpha activity before the passive training, the better the people learned. In addition, the more the alpha activity decreased during passive training, the more easily they learned. These effects occurred in the somatosensory cortex, that is, where the sense of touch is located in the brain.

Researchers seek new methods for therapy

"How the alpha rhythm manages to affect learning is something we investigate with computer models," says PD Dr. Petra Ritter, Head of the Working Group "Brain Modes" at the MPI Leipzig and the Berlin Charit?. "Only when we understand the complex information processing in the brain, can we intervene specifically in the processes to help disorders," adds Petra Ritter. New therapies are the aim of the cooperation network, which Ritter coordinates, the international "Virtual Brain" project, which her team collaborates on, and the "Neural Plasticity Lab," chaired by Hubert Dinse at the RUB.

Learning is dependent on access to sensory information

A high level of alpha activity counts as a marker of the readiness of the brain to exploit new incoming information. Conversely, a strong decrease of alpha activity during sensory stimulation counts as an indicator that the brain processes stimuli particularly efficiently. The results, therefore, suggest that perception-based learning is highly dependent on how accessible the sensory information is. The alpha activity, as a marker of constantly changing brain states, modulates this accessibility.

How to reorder lists in Reminders on iPhone and iPad

If you've created lists within the default Reminders app, there are probably lists that you access more frequently than others. For most of us, that will probably be our work lists. While you can easily switch between lists you can also change the order around to set the ones that you use the most with a higher preference. This way, when you switch between lists you'll see them in the order you prefer instead.

  1. Launch the Reminders app from the Home screen of your iPhone or iPad.
  2. On the iPhone, tap on the menu icon in the upper left hand corner.
  3. Now, on either iPhone or iPad, tap the Edit button in the upper right had corner of the main manu.
  4. You'll now see delete options to the left of each list. You'll also see the addition of another icon off to the right. This is to move list items. Tap and hold down on this icon next to the list you'd like to move.
  5. Drag it up or down in the list. Repeat this for each list you'd like to move around until the order is to your liking. Then tap the Done button in the upper right hand corner.
  6. You'll now be taken back to the main menu screen. Tap the Done button in the upper left hand corner to return to your lists again.
  7. That's it. You should now notice your lists are in the order you selected.
