AT&T to Acquire NextWave Wireless for WCS and AWS Spectrum ...

AT&T* announced today that it has agreed to acquire NextWave Wireless, Inc. NextWave holds licenses in the Wireless Communication Services (WCS) and Advanced Wireless Service (AWS) bands.

WCS spectrum was first auctioned in 1997, but has not been utilized for mobile Internet usage due to technical rules designed to avoid possible interference to satellite radio users in adjacent spectrum bands.

In June, AT&T and Sirius XM filed?a joint proposal with the FCC?that would protect the adjacent satellite radio spectrum from interference and enable WCS spectrum ? for the first time ? to be used for mobile Internet service. This proposed solution on WCS spectrum, which is still under review by the FCC, effectively creates much-needed new spectrum capacity.

AT&T said the proposed WCS rule changes and NextWave acquisition represent an alternative approach to creating additional wireless network capacity to help support skyrocketing wireless data usage on smartphones and tablets. If approved, the proposal will enable AT&T to begin initial deployment of WCS spectrum for added 4G LTE capacity, in approximately three years.

Under the terms of the agreement, AT&T will acquire all the equity of NextWave for approximately $25 million plus a contingent payment of up to approximately $25 million and, through a separate agreement with NextWave?s debtholders, all of the company?s outstanding debt will be acquired by AT&T or retired by NextWave, for a total of $600 million in cash. The outstanding debt held by NextWave?s bondholders will be satisfied through cash and a transfer of selected NextWave assets.? NextWave?s debtholders have agreed to the terms, and a majority of its shareholders have agreed to support the transaction.

The transaction is subject to review by the Federal Communications Commission and to other customary closing conditions. Additionally, NextWave?s transfer of assets may be subject to Hart-Scott-Rodino review by the Federal Trade Commission and Department of Justice.? AT&T anticipates closing the transaction by the end of 2012.

Being that today is ?National Ice Cream Sandwich? day, we?re in a particularly festive mood and have decided to throw on our party planning hats. This Saturday happens to be President Barack Obama?s 51st birthday (Happy Birthday Mr. President!) While we?re not entirely sure what the President?s plans are for his big day, we?re hoping he?s planning to spend it?home?celebrating with his wife, kids, the family pet ?Bo? and? his closest friends.

One of the perks that comes with the Presidency is you get to move into one of the nation?s most historic, beautiful, iconic and instantly recognizable homes. If living at the world?s most famous address isn?t enough, there?s an abundance of great spaces available for you to host a birthday party that would make the likes of Jay-Z and George Clooney jealous.

We?re not the most seasoned of party planners here at Coldwell Banker Real Estate, but we sure do know home. So here are a few spaces in the White House we think would make for a memorable birthday celebration!

This largest room in the entire house, White House designers have purposefully left furniture out of this room so it can be used for large gatherings like weddings, after-dinner entertaining and press conferences. There?s plenty of free space for tables and chairs but most importantly, there seems to be ample ?room for a dance floor.

If the President wants a more laid back type of birthday celebration, then watching a new movie (I?m sure he could swing an advanced copy!) in ?The Family Theater? might do the trick. The theater is located in the East Wing and offers all the amenities as the major movie theater chains.

*Fun Fact: President Franklin D. Roosevelt had the ?Cloakroom? converted into this theater so he could watch the news and be kept up to date on foreign affairs.

It?s expected to be 94 degrees and sunny on Saturday, so if the President wanted to take advantage of the massive amount of space on the South Lawn, then he could throw quite the birthday celebration. The space is used routinely for barbecues, Easter Egg hunts and concerts so we already know the space can handle a lot of guests without it feeling too cramped. We suggest a barbecue followed by a fun set of games like Badminton, Volleyball and Soccer to commemorate the Olympics.

*Fun Fact: The Magnolia Trees located here were planted by President Andrew Jackson and are the earliest remaining ones planted by a U.S. President.

However President Obama plans to celebrate his birthday, we know his home and the people in it will help make it a special day. Happy Birthday!

IDC: Apple's still king of the tablet hill with 68 percent of the market

IDC's cabal of statisticians, nerds and people who just love spreadsheets have handed down their latest document about the state of the tablet market. Of the 25 million slates shipped in the second quarter, 17 million of them were iPads -- giving Apple 68.2 percent of the market. Samsung came second with 2.4 million devices and Amazon third, although since the Kindle Fire maker doesn't reveal numbers, there's probably some guesswork involved there. Rounding out the top five are ASUS and Acer, although the former should expect to move up a place (or two), depending on the success of the Nexus 7 when Q3's results are released in a few months time.

Seattle Real Estate Prices Rise Again: 2.6% Gain for Seattle Metro ...

The greater?Seattle real estate market saw another strong gain this month, according to the latest numbers from Standard & Poor?s/Case-Shiller. ?As reported by the Seattle Times, Seattle?s home prices rose 2.6 percent from April to May (the metric has a significant lag from actual market timing).

While the country as a whole has seen a less than one percent loss over the past year, almost all metropolitan areas are starting to show gains. The average metro showed a 2.2 percent gain as compared to last year, with Seattle near the middle of the pack.

Chicago, Atlanta and San Francisco posted the biggest monthly increases, at 4.5 to 3.9 percent. Minneapolis was next, followed by Seattle and Portland.

Detroit, San Diego and Charlotte posted the smallest gains.

The increases partly reflect the impact of seasonal buying. The month-to-month prices aren?t adjusted for seasonal factors.

In the past year, the 20-city price index has dropped 0.7 percent, the smallest decline in about 18 months.

David Blitzer, chairman of the S&P?s index committee, cautioned that the trend would need to continue into the summer and fall to ensure that it isn?t just a reflection of strong springtime and early summer sales.

?The housing market seems to be stabilizing, but we are definitely in wait and see mode for the next few months,? he said.

The S&P/Case-Shiller monthly index covers roughly half of U.S. homes. It measures prices compared with those in January 2000 and creates a three-month moving average. The May figures are the latest available.

The housing market is recovering, but at a slow and uneven pace. Sales of new homes fell in June after reaching a two-year high in May. Sales of previously occupied homes also fell last month, but were higher than a year ago.

Builders are getting more confident, partly because they are seeing more interest from potential buyers. Builders broke ground in June on the most new homes and apartments in four years.

Even with the gains, the index is 33 percent below its peak reached in the summer of 2006, at the height of the housing boom. Based on the 20-city index, home prices are now at about the same level as in early 2003.

The supply of homes for sale remains very low, which has helped stabilize prices. At the current sales pace, it would take six and a half months to exhaust the supply of previously-occupied homes. That?s just above the six months economists consider healthy.

There were 144,000 new homes for sale in June, only slightly higher than the 143,000 in May, which was the lowest supply on records dating back to 1963.

Despite the modest gains in housing, the broader economy has weakened in recent months. Employers have added an average of only 75,000 jobs a month in the April-June quarter. That?s much lower than the average of 226,000 added in the first three months of this year.

Housing added to economic growth in the second quarter, but the sector isn?t large enough to make a big difference. The economy expanded at only a 1.5 percent annual rate in April-June, below the first quarter?s 2 percent pace. Both readings are much lower than the fourth quarter?s 4.1 percent growth.
